Youth Fireside on New Year's Eve

by Miriam Caldwell | More from this Blogger

If you have teenagers you may be wondering the best way to handle New Year's Eve this year, especially since it does fall on a Sunday. This is a fair question. Fortunately the church has come up with a great answer. President Hinckley will be speaking on the new theme for mutual this year. Elder Jeffrey R Holland and Sister Susan W Tanner will be speaking as well. Peter Brienholt, William Joseph and Ryan Tani will be guest musicians for the night.

The fireside is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. MST. If you live in the United States or Canada you should be able to view the fireside on New Year's Eve. If you live outside of the United States you may need to attend a rebroadcast of the event. The fireside should be available at your local fireside. If you live in the Salt Lake City area, tickets were available for the event. There is a stand-by line available if you want to try for attend the broadcast live. However, this is a risk, and you most likely will not get in.

If you have youth you may want to encourage them to remember to keep the Sabbath day holy, and come up with alternatives that will allow them to celebrate in a respectful way. This may include offering refreshments after the fireside or playing games as a family. You can determine which idea would work best for your family.

You may consider having a party for your youth planned for Saturday night. Many stakes or regions will offer a dance on Saturday night as well. This is a safe environment for your youth to bring in the New Year. If you have discussed this with your teenager, it should not be a big deal to skip the major celebrations on Sunday night.
