Everyday Citizens Fail to Stand Up for Disabled

I watched another episode of What Would You Do? this past Friday night, only this time people really disappointed me. The “set-up” was straightforward and the discrimination was clear, yet through an entire day of filming, only one person stood up for the two girls who were being discriminated against. And to make matters worse, three people sided with the person who was doing the discriminating. The scene took place in a little restaurant where two young women who are hearing impaired walked up to the counter and expressed interest in applying for a job at the restaurant. The manager, … Continue reading

Young Women: “Anchors of Testimony”

In “Anchors of Testimony,” Sister Mary N Cook speaks to the young women of the church. She opens the talk by describing water lilies. She explains that they grow in stagnant ponds and that they have stalks to root them firmly in place. This anchors them during the torrential storms that come their way. She compared the girls to the lilies with their anchors being their testimonies. Sister Cook then challenges the girls to pray that their testimonies may be strengthened. She urges this especially if they are having a difficult time understanding or living a principle of the gospel. … Continue reading

In her talk “All Times, in All Things, in All Places” Sister Elaine S Dalton speaks to the young women. Sister Dalton opens her talk by emphasizing the Christ came to this earth with a mission, and he stayed focus on that mission his entire life. Young Women: “Stand as a Witness”

In “Stand as a Witness” Sister Susan W. Tanner speaks to the young women of the church. Sister Tanner opens her talk by sharing an experience her daughter had on her mission. She wanted tot each about the Holy Ghost, but when she planned the lesson, it did not feel right. Instead they taught about Jesus Christ, when the investigator felt the Holy Ghost witness about the truthfulness of their message, they were able to teach about the Holy Ghost. Sister Tanner goes on to tell about King Benjamin and how he bore his testimony of Christ to his people. … Continue reading

Young Women: Integrity

The final value in the Personal Progress book is Integrity. The theme for this value is “I will have the moral courage to make my decisions based on my knowledge of what is right and wrong.” The scripture is Job 27:5: “Till I die I will not have my integrity removed from me.” This is a wonderful value that will help your daughter develop strong and good characters. The value experiences for integrity really focus on helping the girls to understand what integrity is. There are several spiritual accounts that the girls should read. They are also encouraged to interview … Continue reading

Young Women: Knowledge

The next value in the Personal Progress book is knowledge. The theme is “I will continually seek opportunities for study and growth.” The scripture associated with this value is Doctrine and Covenants 88:118: “Seek learning, even by study also by faith.” I really like the scripture because it emphasizes that fact that you need to seek out and work to gain knowledge, but it is also important to acknowledge God and seek out things He would have you learn. The value experiences focus on the young women learning about themselves. They can list talents that they have and then work … Continue reading

Young Women: Individual Worth

The third value in the Personal Progress is Individual Worth. The scripture is “Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God” (Doctrine and Covenants 18:10). This theme focuses on self-esteem. The girls should learn that Heavenly Father loves each of them and that He is aware of them and their needs. The experiences focus on learning about how Heavenly Father loves them. They also have the opportunity to realize their talents and gifts. In addition to learning that they are each of worth, the girls learn the importance of helping everyone feel their worth. This is … Continue reading

Young Women: Divine Nature

In continuing with the values in the Personal Progress program, the next value to discuss is Divine Nature. The scripture is 2 Peter 1:4-7. The motto for this value is “I have inherited divine qualities, which I will strive to develop.” This is a wonderful value for the girls to learn about and focus on. It really focuses on having the young women learn what divine qualities are, and then choose which ones to develop. It is important for our young women to learn that they do have these wonderful qualities. It is important that they realize that they can … Continue reading

Terrific Teens

Last Saturday, was the Young Women General Broadcast. I am not currently serving in the young women’s program, and I don’t have any daughters that are the age of the young women. But, I do have a daughter. She is 5 years old, going on 6 in a couple of months, and I worry about so many challenges she will face as she grows older. I worry about my boys too, but I guess since I’ve been a girl, and a teenager, and a young woman, I know how difficult life’s challenges can be. And, I know they are even … Continue reading

What Would You Not Forgive – Part 2?

Yesterday I told you of the discussion four of us had about what we would not forgive or would struggle to forgive. The other thing both of us the women in the group mentioned was domestic violence. I’d find it hard to live with a man who took out his frustration and anger on me in violent ways. You’d always be walking on eggshells wondering what next would set him off. I say he, because although abuse of husband by wives does happen, it is less common. With domestic violence there is often a pattern where the violent act is … Continue reading
