Young Women: Spiritual Skillsby Miriam Caldwell | More from this Blogger 02 Mar 2007 07:08 AM As your young woman grows up and prepares to go out on her own, you have probably made sure that she has the skills necessary to care for herself. This includes budgeting, cooking, finding a good job, and managing her time well. In fact many of the lessons in Young Women's deal directly with helping your daughter develop these skills. But have you spent the time necessary so that you daughter has the necessary spiritual skills to survive on her own? Necessary spiritual skills include the ability to discern right from wrong, a desire to live the gospel, and the ability to recognize the promptings of the Holy Ghost. Other important skills include personal prayer and scripture study. As she goes out on her own your daughter will be faced with many different choices. One of these choices will be the about whether or not she remains active in the church. Hopefully she will have had the experiences she needed to develop her own testimony of the gospel. Once she has a testimony it will be easier for her to make the right spiritual choices. Family home evening and family scripture study are both excellent times to teach these skills to your family. The best way to teach your children is through the power of example. If you share your times of struggle or trials with your children (as appropriate) and then demonstrate the proper way to survive those trials (relying on the Lord, daily prayer and a positive attitude), your daughter will learn how to face her trials. No matter what path your daughter chooses it is important that you love her and stay in contact with her. Young adults in the church face many temptations and it can be a difficult time in their lives. They are often truly alone as they are between being a daily part of your family and establishing their own families. Spending time now teaching your daughter about the gospel and how to stay connected to the Savior will help her survive these difficult times.
