Young Women: “Walk in the Light”

In his talk “Walk in the Light” President Henry B Eyring spoke to the young women. President Eyring began his talk by explaining that life is a journey. He outlines the basic principles of the plan of salvation, in order to point out our lives on earth are a chance to prove our faithfulness to Heavenly Father’s commandments. He points out that just by being on earth now, as a member of the church that each of the girls made righteous choices. President Eyring speaks about the blessings of making right choices. This allows you to have the Holy Ghost … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: “Women of Righteousness”

In a devotional address given at BYU on March 13, 2001, Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve addressed the role of women, and how God views them. This was a wonderful talk that I, as a stay-at-home mom, particularly took to heart. It is very uplifting and, as Elder Ballard stated, good for both women and men to read and ponder. He begins by quoting a letter sent to church headquarters from an LDS woman who felt as though she were living a lie. Despite a strong testimony of the gospel, she doubted her value beyond … Continue reading

Young Women: Integrity

The final value in the Personal Progress book is Integrity. The theme for this value is “I will have the moral courage to make my decisions based on my knowledge of what is right and wrong.” The scripture is Job 27:5: “Till I die I will not have my integrity removed from me.” This is a wonderful value that will help your daughter develop strong and good characters. The value experiences for integrity really focus on helping the girls to understand what integrity is. There are several spiritual accounts that the girls should read. They are also encouraged to interview … Continue reading

Young Women: Good Works

In continuing with the values in the Personal Progress book, our sixth value is Good Works. This is a wonderful value that focuses on service. The theme is “I will help others and build the kingdom through righteous service.” The scripture is 3 Nephi 12:16: “Therefore let your light so shine before this people that they might see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” This is a wonderful value for all people to learn, but I think it really helps the young women in their development. One of the experiences has the girls read scriptures … Continue reading

Young Women: Choice and Accountability

The next value in the Personal Progress book is Choice and Accountability. The theme for this value is “I will choose good over evil and accept responsibility for my decisions.” The scripture is Joshua 24:15: “Choose for whom ye will serve; . . . but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” This value is extremely important for each young woman to grasp. The value experiences focus on the ways to learn the commandments and to feel and recognize the promptings of the Holy Ghost. The girls are encouraged to make difficult decisions now, so that … Continue reading

Young Women: Knowledge

The next value in the Personal Progress book is knowledge. The theme is “I will continually seek opportunities for study and growth.” The scripture associated with this value is Doctrine and Covenants 88:118: “Seek learning, even by study also by faith.” I really like the scripture because it emphasizes that fact that you need to seek out and work to gain knowledge, but it is also important to acknowledge God and seek out things He would have you learn. The value experiences focus on the young women learning about themselves. They can list talents that they have and then work … Continue reading

Young Women: “Daughters of Heavenly Father”

In her talk “Daughters of Heavenly Father” Sister Susan B Tanner addressed the Young Women at the special Young Women’s session of conference. Her talk focused on the importance of each young woman remembering who they are. This knowledge helps guide each young woman in the choices that she will face. Sister Tanner opens her talk by sharing a story of her granddaughter. As a three-year-old she had learned that she was special, and did not hesitate to share that with others. Sister Tanner goes on to say that while you may learned that at a young age, by the … Continue reading

Giving Birth After Age 33 Relates to Longevity

A new study determined that women who give birth after age 33 had twice the odds of having a longer lifespan than women who did not do so. This doesn’t necessarily mean you should consider having a baby (or another baby) after age 33 in an effort to increase your lifespan. The reality is a bit more complex than that. Researchers at Boston University, Boston Medical Center (and elsewhere) conducted a study about aging. They looked at information that was gathered in a previous study that was called the Long Life Family Study. In other words, this study used previously … Continue reading

The Flu Shot for Baby-Is it Necessary?

In our house, we have always been big proponents of the flu shot. We all get them every year. And, it is that time of year again. My husband works in the medical field, and in past years, he has had to be in contact with flu patients regularly. Since our children are young, we have always been cautious. In his current job, he is not in close contact with patients infected with the flu, although he does still work in a hospital. So, I found myself asking him if it was really necessary. I had never really questioned it … Continue reading
