Young Women: Christmas and Personal Progress

The holidays are coming up. You can easily plan activities that fit in with the young women’s Personal Progress and Christmas. Here are four uplifting activities that will help with Personal Progress and focus on the true meaning of Christmas. 1) You can have a night in which you view artwork that depicts the Nativity and life of Christ. As you view the artwork, you may also want to read scriptures that pertain to parts of Christ’s life. You may also listen or sing along to Handel’s Messiah. At the end of the activity you may want to leave a … Continue reading

Young Women: 4 Ideas for Service Projects

So often when we think of service projects for young women to complete, the first thing that comes to mind is babysitting. In fact I have mentioned this service in quite a few blogs. However, I realize that babysitting is just not the right service for everyone to offer. I personally never cared for babysitting as a teenager, and I stopped by the time I was fourteen. Here are four service projects that a young woman could complete instead of the typical babysitting. 1) Often times the elderly could use help around the house or running errands. This is a … Continue reading

Young Women: Integrity

The final value in the Personal Progress book is Integrity. The theme for this value is “I will have the moral courage to make my decisions based on my knowledge of what is right and wrong.” The scripture is Job 27:5: “Till I die I will not have my integrity removed from me.” This is a wonderful value that will help your daughter develop strong and good characters. The value experiences for integrity really focus on helping the girls to understand what integrity is. There are several spiritual accounts that the girls should read. They are also encouraged to interview … Continue reading

Young Women: Good Works

In continuing with the values in the Personal Progress book, our sixth value is Good Works. This is a wonderful value that focuses on service. The theme is “I will help others and build the kingdom through righteous service.” The scripture is 3 Nephi 12:16: “Therefore let your light so shine before this people that they might see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” This is a wonderful value for all people to learn, but I think it really helps the young women in their development. One of the experiences has the girls read scriptures … Continue reading

A Hug a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

If this past year has taught us anything, it should be that we need to hug our kids more. Actually, we should hug anyone who means anything to us or needs encouragement. Studies have shown that hugs can improve both our physical and mental health. I challenge us all to get in at least one hug a day, if not more. For extra credit, hug so much that others think that you are a little eccentric. Isn’t it funny, how the world works. While I was typing this, my husband interrupted to tell me that there was an ambulance across … Continue reading

The Flu Shot for Baby-Is it Necessary?

In our house, we have always been big proponents of the flu shot. We all get them every year. And, it is that time of year again. My husband works in the medical field, and in past years, he has had to be in contact with flu patients regularly. Since our children are young, we have always been cautious. In his current job, he is not in close contact with patients infected with the flu, although he does still work in a hospital. So, I found myself asking him if it was really necessary. I had never really questioned it … Continue reading

Are You Tired of Playing Referee?

Do you look good in stripes? Most women shun wearing clothing covered with unattractive lines, yet when they have kids it seems they are forced to don the referee uniform more than they would like. After a while, though, some refuse the task and leave it up to their warring offspring to solve their own disputes. How often do you allow your children to resolve their own clashes? Moreover, how often does the technique work? Personally, I am not opposed to having children resolve issues amongst themselves. However, I think you are kidding yourself if you think young children possess … Continue reading

Cut the Criticism

On TV here there has been a show called four weddings. I haven’t watched it as I am not into reality TV but the premise seems to be each bride passes judgment on the other three weddings for what they consider works and what doesn’t. To me is doesn’t sound at all like compulsive viewing watching people criticize the others. Yet it happens all the time. Those married young, as Mick and I both were, are criticized by others. Those with a big age difference or who marry later in life or delay having children till they are financially secure … Continue reading

Gisele Bundchen–Loving Stepmother or Insensitive Troublemaker

She’s a drop dead gorgeous multi-millionaire with a super star new husband, and now women of the world have one more reason to hate supermodel Gisele Bundchen. Apparently, marriage has made the rich (rhymes with witch) more arrogant than ever. If you missed the headlines (and the thousands of subsequent Internet posts), Bundchen is speaking out for the first time about being more than just a stepmom to John Edward Thomas Moynahan, the 18-month-old love child of her new hubby New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and his ex-girlfriend model-actress Bridget Moynahan. In the latest Vanity Fair issue, Bundchen let … Continue reading
