Young Women: Virtue as a Value

Virtue was recently added as a value to the Young Women’s theme, as well as to the Personal Progress award. This value focuses on personal worthiness and purity. When it was introduced the Young Women’s president encouraged all women of the church both in Young Women’s and Relief Society to work towards completing the requirements to pass of the value. This would be especially helpful if you work with Young Women or if you have a young woman in your home. The scripture associated with this value is Proverbs 31:10: “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is … Continue reading

General Women’s Conference: Sister Allred’s Address

The second speaker at the women’s session of general conference was Sister Sylvia H. Allred, the first counselor in the presidency. Her topic was “Holy Temples, Sacred Covenants,” which tied in to Sister Beck’s comment of the importance of temple worship. Sister Allred shared with us her love for the temples, saying they are the most sacred places on earth. There, we receive the greatest blessings possible while also making those blessings available to our beloved ancestors who have gone on ahead. Some members of the Church live near a temple, while others must make tremendous sacrifices to attend. Sister … Continue reading

Young Women: Divine Nature Activities

The value Divine Nature is an important one for the young women to fully grasp. It is important to help the young women truly understand that they are children of God. It is also important for them to understand their purpose here on Earth. As young women’s leaders you may want to plan activities that are based on helping your young women realize their divine nature and what it truly means. Several of the experiences talk about the role of mother. You can review the Family Proclamation with your young women one night and speak about the blessings of being … Continue reading

Young Women: Faith Activities

At times it is good to plan an entire month of activities based around the value that you are covering for the month. This month I am going to give suggestions that can help the girls focus on their faith goals, as well as building faith. This is a topic that requires reverence. You may want to discuss some of the activities with the girls and let them choose the ones they want to do. One activity you could do as a class or an entire young women’s group is to plant and care for a garden. This would be … Continue reading

Young Women: “Walk in the Light”

In his talk “Walk in the Light” President Henry B Eyring spoke to the young women. President Eyring began his talk by explaining that life is a journey. He outlines the basic principles of the plan of salvation, in order to point out our lives on earth are a chance to prove our faithfulness to Heavenly Father’s commandments. He points out that just by being on earth now, as a member of the church that each of the girls made righteous choices. President Eyring speaks about the blessings of making right choices. This allows you to have the Holy Ghost … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: “Women of Righteousness”

In a devotional address given at BYU on March 13, 2001, Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve addressed the role of women, and how God views them. This was a wonderful talk that I, as a stay-at-home mom, particularly took to heart. It is very uplifting and, as Elder Ballard stated, good for both women and men to read and ponder. He begins by quoting a letter sent to church headquarters from an LDS woman who felt as though she were living a lie. Despite a strong testimony of the gospel, she doubted her value beyond … Continue reading

Young Women: Integrity

The final value in the Personal Progress book is Integrity. The theme for this value is “I will have the moral courage to make my decisions based on my knowledge of what is right and wrong.” The scripture is Job 27:5: “Till I die I will not have my integrity removed from me.” This is a wonderful value that will help your daughter develop strong and good characters. The value experiences for integrity really focus on helping the girls to understand what integrity is. There are several spiritual accounts that the girls should read. They are also encouraged to interview … Continue reading

Young Women: Good Works

In continuing with the values in the Personal Progress book, our sixth value is Good Works. This is a wonderful value that focuses on service. The theme is “I will help others and build the kingdom through righteous service.” The scripture is 3 Nephi 12:16: “Therefore let your light so shine before this people that they might see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” This is a wonderful value for all people to learn, but I think it really helps the young women in their development. One of the experiences has the girls read scriptures … Continue reading

Young Women: Choice and Accountability

The next value in the Personal Progress book is Choice and Accountability. The theme for this value is “I will choose good over evil and accept responsibility for my decisions.” The scripture is Joshua 24:15: “Choose for whom ye will serve; . . . but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” This value is extremely important for each young woman to grasp. The value experiences focus on the ways to learn the commandments and to feel and recognize the promptings of the Holy Ghost. The girls are encouraged to make difficult decisions now, so that … Continue reading
