Young Women: Faith Activities

At times it is good to plan an entire month of activities based around the value that you are covering for the month. This month I am going to give suggestions that can help the girls focus on their faith goals, as well as building faith. This is a topic that requires reverence. You may want to discuss some of the activities with the girls and let them choose the ones they want to do. One activity you could do as a class or an entire young women’s group is to plant and care for a garden. This would be … Continue reading

Dinner Discussions 2008 Week 20

This week’s dinner discussions are based on lesson twenty in the manual. The Primary lessons are one week behind. In the summer months you may want to extend the discussions to include a theme that you work on as a family. These themes could be fun activities or projects that you work on during the summer days or you could choose to make them much more spiritual. If you have a child in nursery or Sunbeams he learned about being thankful for his eyes. The lesson discussed the many things that we can see. It also pointed out that the … Continue reading

Young Women: Camp

It is time to start preparing for your young woman to go camping for the summer. Young Women’s camp is a great experience for most girls. The camp should teach good survival and nature skills (although many of these will be covered in pre-camp activities) and it allows your girls to grow spiritually. If you are the parent of a young woman, you should encourage your daughter to attend. Many camps now take place in cabins at nice campgrounds. There are not as many wards that camp in tents anymore. This can make camp less intimidating for those girls who … Continue reading

Reaching the Youth on Wednesday Nights

When it comes to youth attending the weekly activities, many wards struggle with keeping the Priests and Laurels active. This is a difficult task because the youth are working or involved in extracurricular activities. They may be extremely busy with schoolwork and may find it hard to fit everything in. However, these activities are still important for them to attend. Here are four things to consider when helping the youth to keep coming out. 1) If you are a parent you may want to lay out some ground rules about attending the activities. You may require that your youth attend … Continue reading

Young Women: Thanking Your Leaders

The summer is an extremely busy time for young women’s leaders. It can be quite stressful for the leaders to spend time away from their families for camp and then youth conference. This is in addition to the time spent each week on Sundays and Wednesday evenings. Now would be a great time to let your young women’s leaders know how much you appreciate all the time that they spend serving. Here are three ideas: 1) You could have your daughter write a note of appreciation and take a plate of cookies by the leaders home. This is a great … Continue reading

Young Women: The Benefits of Girls’ Camp

As someone who is not overly fond of hiking and the outdoors in general, I always attended Girls’ Camp at the orders of my mother. She had made me a deal that if I went for the four years to pass of everything, that I would not have to go again. I went my four years, and I haven’t been since. I really have not been camping since either. But I plan on having my daughters attend Girls’ Camp when it is time. Girls’ Camp gives the young women a chance to develop closer friendships, which can help them as … Continue reading

LDS Family Week in Review: June 3-9

This week, we covered topics ranging from postpartum depression to ways to keep our youth busy over the lazy, hazy summer days. And, believe it or not, we actually had a full week of Gospel Doctrine and Relief Society lesson blogs! All in all, it’s been an interesting week! Gospel Doctrine In Signs of Destruction, we looked at some of the signs of the Second Coming of Jesus. In Blessings of the Elect, we talked about some of the positive blessings that we will receive when Christ returns. In Who Are the Elect?, we pondered how we might be able … Continue reading

Young Men: Summer Activities

It is important to keep your son out of trouble over the summer months. The summer is great for relaxing and having fun, but it easy for kids to get in trouble if they have too little to do. Here are five activities that you may consider having your young man do over the summer. 1) You can have your son work. One common job is mowing lawns; another is taking on a paper route. You may also consider encouraging your sixteen year old to find work over the summer. You can encourage your son to pay his tithing and … Continue reading

LDS Family Week in Review: May 13th through 19th

It’s been a great week in the LDS Family Blog! I hope you enjoyed reading as much as Miriam and I enjoyed writing! Gospel Doctrine: This upcoming weekend is stake conference for our stake. Instead of my regular lesson-oriented scripture study, I’m hitting the topical guide for phrases that have peaked my interest. Since they don’t particularly relate, I have simply included them in the day-to-day summary. Monday, May 14th: In Dinner Discussions 2007 Week 17, we reviewed the topics covered at church last week. In Serving Sisters in Primary and Young Women, we talked about how we as sisters … Continue reading
