You'll Always Need Your Mom

In addition to my daughter, I have three sons. The youngest two, ages six and three, still need me quite a bit. The six-year-old is feeling a little insecure about his place in the family and needs reassurance, and the three-year-old is still just enough of a baby that he comes to me for cuddles and kisses, and needs help with almost everything. My nine-year-old son, though, is pretty independent and often goes the whole day without needing my help for anything. On the one hand, it's pretty nice. On the other, it makes me sad. I remember when he depended on me for everything. I'm half-tempted to burst into a chorus of "Sunrise, Sunset" when I think about it.
Last Friday night, my sisters and I went to Salt Lake and didn't get home until around midnight. My husband greeted us at the door, telling me that our nine-year-old had been throwing up. He was asleep now, but my hubby wasn't sure if it would last and he went to the store for soda pop and crackers. My son slept until morning and seemed to be largely better.
I didn't think too much of it until yesterday, when I commented on how I'd been up in Salt Lake. My son said, "You went to Salt Lake?"
"Yes," I told him. "I was there on Friday."
"Was that the night when you didn't get home until late?" he asked.
"Yes."
"I really missed you when I started to throw up," he said.
That melted my heart. I remember being a child and having the flu, and the only thing that made me feel better was having my mother nearby. Just knowing she was in the room helped take the edge off the sickness. And to know that my big, huge son, the one that's going to be taller than me in a couple of years, the one who can program the computer and fix anything in the house and doesn't seem to need me anymore, really does need me? Suddenly everything was right with my universe again.
God created mommies. I have no doubt about that. He also created sons (and daughters) for mommies to love.
