Why is God Doing This to Me?

by Tristi Pinkston | More from this Blogger

Oftentimes, as we face life's most difficult challenges, we are tempted to wonder what we ever did to deserve this trial in our lives. Sometimes we even say out loud, "I wonder why God is doing this to me." This is a misperception of what is actually taking place. God isn't "doing" anything to you - He's allowing certain things to take place for your benefit and growth.

In 2 Nephi, 26: 24-25, we read: He doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the world; for he loveth the world, even that he layeth down his own life that he may draw all men unto him. Wherefore, he commandeth none that they shall not partake of his salvation.

Behold, doth he cry unto any, saying: Depart from me? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; but he saith: Come unto me all ye ends of the earth, buy milk and honey, without money and without price.

Notice the words, "draw all men" and "come." He's offering an invitation. He's not demanding that we come to Him, He's not barking out orders like a general. He's inviting us. He's using symbols that are pleasing to us - "milk and honey." He's trying to entice us into something good. These are not the actions of a God who would inflict horrible trials on us - rather, they're the actions of a God who allows things to happen for our good and our benefit.

I have blogged frequently about the trials we experience, and how we need each of them to learn the things we must learn to achieve the glory our Heavenly Father has for us. I do this because I believe it's crucial for all of us to understand the Lord's plan for us. He never leaves us alone-as we go through our trials, He is right there to help us over the hurdles. He does not create bad things in our lives - most are created either by ourselves and our poor choices, or by others and their poor choices. He allows all of us to learn from our mistakes, and sometimes that means others get hurt along the way. Unfortunately, we are sometimes the ones that get hurt. But He provides a way for us to heal and to forgive.
