The Blessings of Being Set Apart

As members of the Church, we are all given opportunities to serve. Sometimes these opportunities come as assignments, but more often, they come as callings. We serve in our callings for as long as needed or until we are given a new stewardship. Some serve for as many as five years, but it’s rare to hold a position longer than that. When we get a new calling, we are set apart to serve in that calling. This means that the bishop gives us a blessing that we might be guided and inspired as we fulfill our duties in regard to … Continue reading

Supporting Your Spouse in His or Her Calling

When your spouse gets a calling in essence you receive the calling as well. Well not quite, but you do have to deal with allowing your spouse the extra time that he or she needs to complete the calling. This can be a difficult at times. I think that Bishop’s families and Relief Society President’s families often have the most that they have to deal with in terms of the whole family being affected by the calling. Here are four ways that you can support your spouse in his or her calling. 1) Allow your spouse time to prepare for … Continue reading

An Honest Heart

For the last gospel doctrine article, we discussed a true heart. Along the same vein, I would like to examine an honest heart, and how to cultivate it. Promises are given to those who have an honest heart. In D&C 8:1, Oliver Cowdry is promised that if he asks with an honest heart, he will receive the knowledge he desires. (Faith, of course, is also a key component in the asking.) Similarly, in D&C 11:10, Hyrum Smith is promised gifts from the Lord if he asks with an honest heart. The most wonderful promise of all, however, comes in D&C … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Unable to See the Possibilities

In this week’s Sunday school lesson, Christ returns to Galilee to preach the gospel to His friends and neighbors (Luke 4:14-32). But instead of receiving the word of the Savior of mankind, they can only ask “Is not this Joseph’s son?” I began to wonder how many times we refuse to see the possibilities another person might have due to what we are so sure we ‘know’. Over and over again, we hear how important first impressions are. Although we are told not to judge a book by its cover – not to be bound by those first impressions – … Continue reading

The LDS Families Week In Review: January 21-27

It’s always nice to wrap up the week and summarize, especially if you’ve missed our blogs (I know you’d never do that)! As we start getting ready for Sunday, let’s take a look at what we’ve covered getting ready for our lessons. Sunday School We started off the week by examining the mission of John the Baptist in Prepare His Way and Making His Paths Straight. John helped prepare those he preached to for the mortal ministry of Christ. We took a look at how we can help prepare those around us for His second coming. In Unquenchable Fire, we … Continue reading

Whom the Lord Calls, He Qualifies

I told my husband when the Branch President asked if he could stop by that he would extend us both callings. Sure enough, that was the reason for his visit. We were expecting to be called to the Primary or, more likely, the Nursery (the current nursery leaders just had a baby last week and we have a history in the class). Instead, he called my husband to be Sunday School President, and me as second counselor in the Relief Society. “Wow,” I said. Then I said it another three times, all in sort of a shocked and dazed tone … Continue reading

Do You Have More than One Calling?

In the church, leaders are discouraged from giving people more than one calling. This can become overwhelming and very time consuming. However there are wards and branches that are small enough that it is a necessity to have people serving and helping in more than one area. It can also become difficult if the majority of the stake leadership callings come from your ward as well. Here are five tips to make holding more than one calling possible. 1) The first step is to make sure that you really need to fill the calling. For example I served in the … Continue reading

Are You Aspiring to a Calling?

Have you ever aspired to a calling? At the adult session of my stake conference, my stake president spoke about this briefly. He actually shared a personal story of a time when he was sure he was going to receive a calling, but then he did not. He spoke of the brief disappointment, and then the realization that the Lord knew what He was doing. He also spoke of how people are prepared to serve. Since then I have been thinking about this. This January when I was released as a Sunday School teacher, I was told that they already … Continue reading

Resources for Your Calling

Are you having trouble with your calling? Do you need help teaching or are unsure of what you should be doing? Are in charge of an in-service meeting where you need to train your teachers? You can find out more about what you should be doing in a few simple places. If you are a teacher, there is a great section in the front of every manual that explains what your basic duties are. It should give guidelines on what resources you should use, as well as how to handle problems in the class. You can also consult the book … Continue reading

Called to…Be Tried?

Have you ever had a calling where everything seemed to line up against you? I mentioned earlier in the month that I had recently been asked to serve as second counselor in the Relief Society presidency. Since I accepted the calling, everything has seemed to go completely wrong. Just getting through simple tasks seems to require Herculian effort. We’ve had car problems – including totaling a van I brought along on a trip so I could attend a presidency meeting. We’ve had communication problems. We’ve had whoops-did-I-do-that problems. On the worst day thus far, I not only wound up in … Continue reading
