What I Believe-Revelation

When we think of the word revelation, we often think of visions or voices. But, we believe revelation is a lot more simple. While it CAN be a vision, or a very powerful experience, it can often be a simple feeling or thought in our minds. As members of the church, we believe that there is continuing revelation from God through a modern day Prophet. Today, the prophet is President Thomas S. Monson. He speaks twice a year to the church as a whole during what we call, General Conference. It is televised here in Utah, and broadcast by satellite … Continue reading

What I Believe-Families

In the past, Mormons have been known to have big families. I think the trend now isn’t so much 10-12 kids, but maybe more like 2-7. But regardless of how many kids you have, if you are Mormon, then you understand why families are so important. Everyone loves their families. Well, most people do. We know that they are the people that we feel most comfortable around. They are the ones that we enjoy spending time with, and I think as you get older, you really learn to appreciate your family from your childhood even more. But, once we start … Continue reading

What I Believe-Baptism

In most churches, baptism or christening is a part of the religion. Some religions do it when you are just a baby with a sprinkling of water, others believe in full immersion in water. We also believe in baptism, and here is a little bit about what we believe. First, we believe it is important for several reasons. First, Christ was baptized. Yet, we know He was perfect, and without sin. So, why was He baptized? We believe it was a vital part of God’s plan, and that without baptism, you cannot return and live with God again. We believe … Continue reading

What I Believe-The Bible and The Book of Mormon

Many times, it is unfairly stated that Mormons do not believe in the Bible. How wrong that is! We do believe in the Bible. We use the King James Version of the Bible because we believe it is the version that is translated most accurately. We believe it was written by prophets of God and we believe in both the Old and New Testaments. We use them regularly in our church services, and we are encouraged to read the Bible regularly. We also believe that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. We do not look at the … Continue reading

Poking Fun of Mormons

I just don’t get it. I don’t understand the need others feel to make fun of other religions. Sure, the joke now and then is one thing, but creating entire musicals, shows, books around trying to make fun of another religion seems like a waste of time. Unfortunately, I’m a member of a religion that gets made fun of…a lot. Recently, there was an article written in the Washington Post titled, “Why I won’t be seeing the Book of Mormon Musical“. He makes some fabulous points. I couldn’t have said it better myself. But, here is what I don’t get. … Continue reading

How Well do YOU Know the Bible?

A recent survey found that mormons know more about the Bible than catholics, or other protestant religions. Interesting huh? This survey also found that atheists and agnostics know more about major world religions than those of other faiths. Is this surprising? I’m not sure if it is, but I do find it very interesting. Many times, our church is accused of not even believing in the Bible at all. But, we are encouraged as members of the church to read, and know all works of scripture. Books that we believe are scripture include both the Bible and the Book of … Continue reading

What’s Wrong with Mormons? — B. Jay Gladwell

I was born and raised in the Church and I’ve never doubted the teachings, although I do believe that we all go through a conversion process, born in the Church or not. I went through mine in bits and spurts during my teenage years and now, as an adult (and not so much a teenager anymore) my testimony is strong and I enjoy a close relationship with my Heavenly Father. But when asked to explain these thoughts and feelings to someone who doesn’t understand where I’m coming from, I have a tendency to choke up, especially when it comes to … Continue reading

General Conference: “The Miracle of the Holy Bible”

In his talk “The Miracle of the Holy Bible” Elder M Russell Ballard talks about the blessings the Bible brings to each of us. He opens his talk by reviewing the way that the Bible became available to all of us. He speaks of the courage of Martin Luther, William Tyndale and John Wycliffe. He also speaks of the importance Johannes Gutenberg and the printing press. Elder Ballard goes on to speak about the sacred words that are found in the Bible. He points out that it is through the Bible that we learn about the church and Jesus Christ. … Continue reading

Pioneer Appreciation

I am not a history buff. In fact, I claim to hate history and want nothing to do with it. Unfortunately, this tends to encompass the history of my own church as well. I am not like many people that I have met that love to learn about church history, but give me a good fiction book to read, and I’m there! Growing up in Texas as a child, I was vaguely reminded of the pioneers and what they did for church history. And, when I say vaguely reminded I mean that I was probably given a lesson about the … Continue reading

More Failed Doomsday Predictions – Part 1

If you are reading this, we are still here and Harold Camping’s prediction that the rapture would occur on May 21 wasn’t correct. I make fun of these predictions, but I must say that I do have sympathy for the followers that really believe and especially those that sell off their possessions. Anyhow, back to more failed doomsday predictions. Mormon founder Joseph Smith made his own prediction back in 1835 that Jesus would return in 56 years. I guess the good news for Smith was that he was dead well before 1891, so he didn’t have to listen to any … Continue reading
