What Can I Do Today?

So often it can be overwhelming to think about everything we need to do to become a better person. There is always something more to add to that list. With the many roles in your life you may be striving to become a better spouse, a better parent, a better friend, a better employee, a better visiting teacher and a better primary teacher. It can be difficult to find the balance between trying to better ourselves and being a negative influence.

If we spend too much time on what we are not doing right, then we are demeaning ourselves. If we spend all of the time listing areas that we could improve in or listing goal after goal to improve ourselves, then we are setting ourselves up for failure. It can be difficult to change everything at once. We are not expected to become perfect overnight. It is something that we should strive for, but really only a step at a time.

It is important that we realize that and change our focus. Instead of looking to change everything at once, we simply need to ask ourselves "What can I do today?" What one thing can you change today? What is one goal that you can work on? It may be as simple as reading your scriptures. You may decide to stay calm and not lose your temper. You may decide to exercise or to spend more time praying. You may spend time learning a new skill.

If you are feeling overwhelmed at what you should be doing, and do not feel that you can simply choose just one thing make it a matter of prayer. The Lord can help you decide where your focus should be, and He can give you the strength to make the necessary changes to your life. He can help you learn, help you to gain self-control and help you to be happy. As you put your trust in Him, He will guide you to a happier, peaceful life.
