The All You Grocery Challenge – I’m Out

Well, I fell off the Walmart wagon. The All You Challenge to spend less than $25 per person for four weeks fell the way of the college kid home for a visit. For the first two weeks, I did great – here alone. I used my vege garden, my stockpile, and my coupons. I came well under the $25 limit. When my college age son came home, I figured out the groceries just fine – came to $40. But then, we went out to dinner. That ended the challenge for me. You just can’t have a college age child home … Continue reading

5 Fun Things About This Writer

No matter how serious we can be in life, there has to be some time for fun. You’ve heard the old saying “All work and no play….”, well it’s true. In life it is important to remember that laughing and spending time with those we love should rank high in our priorities in life, even if other priorities require us to be more on the serious side. In honor of that theory, I’d like to take a moment and say hello here in the Fun Blog. Most of you probably know me from several other blogs, namely the Scrapbooking Blog … Continue reading

Ward Activity: Field Day

One fun idea for a stake or ward activity is to have an old fashion field day. This activity will take a lot planning and logistics, but it will be worth it. You can have the day be as simple or as complicated as you like. Additionally this could easily be a youth only activity. First you need to plan the events that you want to include in your field day activity. You can have a stake softball tournament that takes place while the other activities are taking place as well. You can have the traditional races and events that … Continue reading

Ward Activity: Ward Camp Out

One fun ward activity is the ward camp out. I remember a lot more of these planned when I was a child, then I do now. However, it is a great activity. A ward camp out can create opportunities to bring the ward closer. There is something about sitting around the fire and telling stories that really promotes bonding. If you are planning a ward camp out you will need to schedule a campground several months in advance. You will want to find a campground that is fairly close to the ward. You do not want to put undue strain … Continue reading

Camping Out

I just came home from an awesome Relief Society activity. We had a campfire right in the middle of the Primary room, told scary stories, and had an awesome time bonding. And we managed to host a visiting teaching seminar, as well. I’d like to pass on this great idea, courtesy of our President. First, the setting. We were originally planning to host the campout in the chapel, but we decided that the Primary room was more cozy – and it was. We built a campfire right in the middle of the floor. Not a real fire, of course (although … Continue reading

The Scout Committee

The scout committee is an important part of having a functioning scouting program in your ward. While it is possible for a scoutmaster to run everything himself, it is not the way that the program is supposed to run. One of the biggest reasons is that it leads to burnout of scoutmasters. Being a scoutmaster is a lot of work, and it is nice to for him to have some help with organizing and running the troop. The scout committee is there to help out when needed. The scout committee can help with organizing and finding merit badge counselors. The … Continue reading

Tomorrow is the annual ward breakfast to honor the Fourth of July. It is a fun event every year where we take some time to honor the veterans that have served our country. It is also a time when we can reflect on the great blessings and privileges that come to us as a result of being citizens of the United States. With all this in mind I still present the ten funniest things about the annual ward breakfast. 10) The syrup covered kids climbing all over their parents, the chairs, and the tables. Not to mention the sticky door … Continue reading

Top Ten Items You’ll Find at a Ward Potluck

In honor of our next ward activity, which was recently changed to a potluck dinner, I am going to share the top ten items you’ll find at an LDS potluck dinner. 10) Banana pudding, which comes in several varieties, is a common staple of potlucks. You may end up with slimy kind that has been cooked or the instant Jell-O pudding recipe. This is much more common in the South than other areas of the world. 9) Crockpot Spaghetti—most potlucks have at least two crockpot spaghettis available to choose from. If you are lucky one will have melted mozzarella in … Continue reading

Strange Attitudes Towards Children’s Ministry

Children’s ministry can evoke strange attitudes. In some churches the attitude seems to be anyone can undertake children’s ministry. After all, how hard can it be to keep them amused for the time their parents are in church? If they learn something at the same time so much the better. This attitude is likely to stem from the idea within the church leadership that children’s ministry is secondary and less important than teaching adults, and therefore anyone should be able to do it. When my husband took over as superintendent of our Sunday school years ago, he stopped the practice … Continue reading
