First Presidency Message: Be One

Our First Presidency Message for the month of September comes to us from the inspired mind of President Henry B. Eyring and is entitled, “Be One.” He begins his counsel by reminding us of Christ’s admonition to the members of the Church that we should be one, and that if we are not one, we are not His. He likens this to marriage and quotes the scripture that speaks of a man and a woman leaving their homes and cleaving unto each other, becoming one as husband and wife. This commandment is not meant for this life alone, but is … Continue reading

Visiting Teaching Message – The Gospel of Jesus Christ Teaches the Reality of Our Premortal Existenc

Our visiting teaching message for the month of June is entitled, “The Gospel of Jesus Christ Teaches the Reality of Our Premortal Existence.” As always, we are asked to read the message with our assigned sisters and share our thoughts and feelings on the principles we have taught, bearing testimony. Elder Richard G. Scott tells us that we were in Heaven before we came to earth, in the presence of our Father. We were taught and prepared for the things we would encounter in this life, but we are not allowed to remember our lives before, to ensure that we … Continue reading

The Ten Commandments Series: The Seventh Commandment

In Exodus, chapter twenty, verse fourteen we read: Thou shalt not commit adultery. Marriage between a man and woman is sacred. We are taught that it is ordained of God. Families are patterned after the way things are organized in Heaven, and how they will be organized in the eternities. We have been told that we have been placed in family units here on this earth to help prepare us to live in family units throughout the eternities, and the foundation of every family unit is the marriage between the husband and wife. When we seek to mock or belittle … Continue reading

Gospel Questions: What’s Up with Large Families?

My non-member friend asked me: Why do Mormons have so many kids? If I become a Mormon, do I have to have more kids? When Adam and Eve were placed in the Garden of Eden, they were told to multiply and replenish the earth. Mormons believe that this commandment has never been repealed, and we do have families that are statistically larger than the norm. However, this is not across the board. Some families have two children, others have thirteen, and some couples have not been able to have children at all. The family is central to our Heavenly Father’s … Continue reading

Visiting Teaching Message – March 2008

When the Ensign Magazine arrives each month, a full page is devoted to the message that we as visiting teachers should deliver to our assigned sisters. This issue, however, does not have such a page. Instead, we are encouraged to read the magazine and determine for ourselves which article we feel is most appropriate for our sisters, or which one appeals to us most. The magazine offers many inspirational choices. I mention just a few of them here. “He Lives! The Witness of Latter-Day Prophets” features a quote from each of our prophets, testifying of their knowledge of the divinity … Continue reading

The Ten Lines of Defense

The Church is really focusing on the family, recently more so than ever as we’ve seen from the worldwide broadcast, the Visiting Teaching message this month, and other forms of media. The family is crucial to our Heavenly Father’s plan for His children, and as such, we should protect it above all else. When my husband went to Stake Conference last week (yes, I sluffed – I was sick) he picked up a wonderful flyer from the bulletin board. It reads: The 10 Lines of Defense for Our Family 1. Daily Private Personal Prayer 2. Daily Personal Scripture Study for … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review: February 4th-9th

We’ve had a lot going on in LDS this week. If you weren’t able to join us, you can catch up by reading this summary and following the links. We began the week, as was fitting, by talking about President Hinckley. Tristi blogged about a website where you can go and sign up to participate in a Book of Mormon reading tribute to President Hinckley. At last count, over 28,000 people have chosen to commemorate the passing of that dear man by studying the scriptures as he asked us to do. Miriam then told us of the selection of Thomas … Continue reading
