Sunday Review: Paul’s Testimony

I know this blog is about a week late, but I had to share. Last Sunday was one of the few Sundays I neglected to read the Gospel Doctrine lesson in advance, so of course I was asked to fill in as last minute substitute. I don’t know how well the Spirit I felt translated to the class, but I felt the Holy Ghost stronger than I have felt during the lesson in awhile. The lesson for the week was Acts 1-5. In that lesson, Paul bears his testimony not once but twice. The first group he testifies to was … Continue reading

Faith of Our Fathers – Modern Day Pioneers

As the church grows throughout the world, more and more of its members lack the three hundred (or whatever it is) generation link to the plain crossing pioneers. They might wonder how pioneer day affects them. Of course, learning about the faith-building experiences of others can help us resolve to strengthen our testimonies and press forward with faith. But what can we modern day pioneers do? You see, I am one of those pioneers. As I’ve mentioned before, I am a convert, the first generation in my family. I was blessed not to have strong opposition from my parents when … Continue reading

Reminiscing

It’s hard to believe that today is the tenth anniversary of my baptism into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I hope you’ll allow me to indulge in a little reminiscing on the subject. As I stand here, my mind is blown by the small number of years that have passed. In many ways, it seems as though the gospel has always been a part of my life. The life I lived before seems so distant and foreign. But at the same time, it seems as though it were only yesterday. Oddly enough, I can remember thoughts and … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Studying for a Testimony

As I read the first section of lesson 7 in the “Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball” lesson manual, I was startled by the close relationship to this week’s Sunday School lesson, particularly to the bit I studied today. I suppose this is the time to testify to you that I know the Lord loves to teach us and guide us in our studies of Him, and that He can make all things work together for our good. As I looked at the section on receiving a testimony, I was particularly touched by this statement from President Kimball: “this testimony…will have … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: “Flesh and Blood Hath Not Revealed It Unto Thee”

As we continue to study Lesson 13 in the New Testament manual, we come across a beautiful testimony of the divinity of the Savior by the apostle Peter. I would like to explore the idea of testimonies and where they take root from as we examine Matthew 16:13-19. Following the second miracle of the loaves and fishes, Jesus asks His disciples who men say He is. I found verse 13 a bit confusing, as Christ refers to himself as “I the Son of man”. I thought about how Satan referred to Moses as the son of man rather than the … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Questioning Your Testimony

Although General Conference has thrown something of a cog into our regular Relief Society and Elder’s Quorum lesson planning (pity whoever is conducting this month, as they didn’t have to prepare a lesson! Unfair!), you should be studying from the Spencer W. Kimball handbook. This week, we are reading Chapter 7, a beautiful lesson on Personal Testimony. As I started off by reading the first section, addressing moments from President Kimball’s life, I was touched by the experience his son had. While on his mission, young Elder Andrew Kimball would frequently be impressed to bear his testimony. Later, he would … Continue reading

Dinner Discussions 2007 Spring General Conference

Since this last Sunday was General Conference the dinner discussions for this week should be based on several of the talks that were given this weekend. You could assign each of your children to lead a discussion on their favorite talk or you could talk about the talks that apply more to your family situation. Currently you can download mp3 of the talks or watch them on the Internet. The text versions will be available on Thursday. Several of the talks talked about the Restoration of the gospel. You may want to talk the falling away, the Reformation and then … Continue reading

The LDS Families Week in Review: January 28th – February 3rd

Sunday School The Sunday school lesson for this week centered around John 3-4. We examined various parts of the lesson throughout the week. In Spiritually Reborn, we looked at the need to not only be baptized but to be ‘born again’ of the spirit. In Because of the Simpleness of the Way, we talked about the relative simplicity of casting our eyes – and our whole beings – on Christ, and following the paths He walked. In A Well of Living Water, we talked about Christ’s meeting with the Samaritan woman at the well, and how we, too, can draw … Continue reading

Visiting Teaching: Strengthening Your Personal Testimony of Jesus Christ

The visiting teaching message for February urges us to strengthen our personal testimonies of the Savior. As we do so, we can become tools in the hands of our Heavenly Father, acting out His will on this Earth and serving Him as He would have us do. The message first addresses the question of how to strengthen ones testimony. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we should already have a testimony of our Savior. If we do not, it is imperative that we seek to cultivate and develop one. Without a firm, strong testimony, staying … Continue reading
