Visiting Teaching Message: The Eternal Potential of the Children of God

I greatly appreciated the visiting teaching message given to us for this month of September. It seems that the world would tell us that life is fleeting and that we are of no consequence on a larger scale. Through the gospel of Jesus Christ, we know differently.

Elder Russell M. Nelson shares his testimony that as women, we will receive our richest rewards as we strive to become devoted daughters of God. We will attain thrones, kingdoms, principalities, glory, immortality and eternal lives as we live up to the standards we have been given. We have this potential as righteous women. What an amazing destiny can be ours!

Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president, tells of her desire that every girl and woman in the Church would have a testimony of the eternal nature of motherhood and that our female roles didn't begin here on earth. They began in heaven in the premortal realm and they will continue through the eternities.

Elder M. Russell Ballard contributes the thought that God guides us toward progression and to the realization of our eternal potential. He has given us scriptures to steer us toward our eternal possibilities.

From President Henry B. Eyring we learn that we have been given life so that we might have the learning experiences we need to come back to our Father in Heaven. As our natures are changed through faith and repentance, we can attain eternal life in His kingdom.

We finish up this month's message by taking a trip back in time to hear the words of President John Taylor, who reminds us that our main object is eternal life and exaltation. We should prepare ourselves to "associate with the intelligences exist in the eternal worlds; be admitted again to the presence of our Father, whence we came" and to live with Him eternally. That is the full reason we are here, to prepare for that glorious day.

As I read these quotes, I was deeply touched that there is more to life than our daily grind, the dishes and work and laundry. We are here to reach for something higher, and that goal has been made attainable by obedience to the commandments and counsel we have been given.
