Destination Weddings: Do or Don’t?

Writing about Disney Cruise Weddings/Vow Ceremonies made me think about destination weddings.  Given that I wanted my wedding to be as small and simple as possible, it’s difficult for me to relate to those interested in having a destination wedding. For me, the concept only seems to make sense if the bride or the groom actually hails from the area in which they’re getting married.  Maybe he or she was born abroad, or on the other side of the country.  It’s one thing to ask your guests to spend a lot on travel expenses just because you want to get … Continue reading

What Are Your Favorite Genealogy Websites?

Genealogists can easily set up their very own genealogy blog. The hard part is figuring out what to put in it. Sometimes, it is best to go with what you know. Write about your favorite genealogy websites. You use them all the time, so it won’t be difficult to discuss them in your genealogy blog. Your genealogy blog can be whatever you want it to be. Some genealogists focus on blogging only about their research techniques, and the results of each effort. Others like to include mostly photos with a few sentences that describe the ancestors who are in the … Continue reading

Tips to Make Halloween Easier for Kids With Autism

Kids who have an autism spectrum disorder tend to become uncomfortable, or upset, when things do not go as they expected them to. What may seem like a small change can be overwhelming for kids with this special need. Here are some tips for how to help your child cope with all of the changes that can happen on Halloween. Halloween can be a difficult holiday for kids who have an autism spectrum disorder. While other kids may need little instruction about how to trick-or-treat, and will intrinsically see the fun in wearing a costume, kids with autism might need … Continue reading

Disney Receives Jane Goodall Leadership Award

In late September the Walt Disney Company received what I would consider one of the highest possible honors: the Jane Goodall Institute Global Leadership Award. This might not be a trophy for anything related to movies, and I’ve always said I wish that the company’s main focus was movies, but like it or not Disney’s a global conglomerate now. If they must be so, then at least they’re the type getting one of the top tributes a big company can get. The Jane Goodall Institute Global Leadership Awards are given out to people and companies whom the Institute, including its … Continue reading

Company Offers DNA Test to Help With Weightloss

Having trouble losing weight? Perhaps it has something to do with your DNA. A company called Interleukin Genetics will look at your DNA, and suggest an appropriate diet for you, based on your genotype. If obesity runs in your family, this test could be something to consider. It has been known for quite some time that obesity runs in families. In May of 2011, a team of researchers discovered that there is a gene called KLF14 that acts like a “master switch” that controls the other genes that are related to obesity. This discovery came after a group of British … Continue reading

Family Fun Weekends

Visit Disneyland next weekend to meet Baloo and other rarely-seen Disney characters Everyone knows that the Disney Parks don’t need much of an excuse to throw a party. Sometimes their festivities for actual holidays seem dimmed, because fireworks and parades are almost daily occurrences at the parks. Still, we can trust Disney World or Disneyland to roll out something special for even the most minor of holidays. The first few months of the year are packed with various cultural celebrations, and this year Disneyland has decided to take advantage of that and host a months-long party. The official parks blog … Continue reading

Should the Kids Get a Job?

Last summer, my daughter got a job. She’s five. Now granted, this job was selling lemonade and homemade crafts on the front porch, but she did it for long, grueling hours in the sun every day. She also washed cars with her friends. After a month of this on and off work, she’d made enough money to purchase a Playmobil camper. Then she quit. Poor child. If I hadn’t refused to buy her a camper, she would have spent her summer hours engaged in other endeavors. Or would she? I think that even small children get great satisfaction out of … Continue reading

Can’t We All Just Get Along This Christmas?

Christmas is just around the corner. Many families have a tradition of spending Christmas Day together. Presents will be opened, dinner will be served, and alcohol will be passed around. All this togetherness can be an excellent opportunity to connect with your relatives, especially the ones whom you do not get to see very often. Unless, of course, your family doesn’t get along with each other very well. Let’s face it, there are a lot of us who are dreading having to spend all that “quality time” with family members this Christmas, because we are anticipating that there will be … Continue reading

In Good Company: Part 1

Homeschooling is not the proper choice for every parent. Yet for many the choice to homeschool is often questioned by society. Many wonder if you can properly educate your child at home. I certainly believe that is a fair question. Many wonder if they are properly educated themselves to embark on homeschooling. Again, I believe this to be another fair question. While there are good and bad examples of homeschooling situations, it is nice to sometimes provide a bit of encouragement by showing the good company your children share with many who were homeschooled. Many who decide to “show off” … Continue reading

Higher Prices, Lower Crowds at Disney World

Things are going up and down at Disney World these days. The first thing that’s up is the general ticket costs. That shouldn’t be news to anyone who’s considered a Disney vacation in the past few years. Every year Disney keeps raising their prices; since the last time we covered this topic, a one-day one-park adult admission price has gone up again. Now it costs adults $79 to visit a single park for one day, and child tickets have climbed to $68. And that’s not the only price hike that happened in ’09. Many of the prices for the park’s … Continue reading
