Inspiration on the Word of Wisdom

I have been thinking about the word of wisdom a lot lately. In primary last week, I taught a lesson on the word of wisdom. It was fun, but I have also been thinking about how maybe I was just scraping the surface of what that revelation is all about. I feel like over the past couple of years, my life has been confusing when it comes to food. I have had to make several changes in my diet to breastfeed my children who have allergies and food intolerances. That made me aware. I have watched documentaries that changed both … Continue reading

Preserve Your Family’s Wisdom

When we are growing up, only some of what our parents tell us really sinks in. As the years pass, we begin to realize just how much our parents know and how useful some of the things that they have said really are. The same goes for our grandparents. When we are younger, it is easy to dismiss their advice and suggestions as coming from someone who does not know what life is like for the younger generation. As we become older and wiser ourselves we realize that they, like our parents, often have wisdom that is timeless. Sometimes we … Continue reading

Watch Your Words

Okay so you and your spouse end up in an argument. It happens to all of us, from time to time. I’m always suspicious of people who claim to never argue. One of the things to beware of in an argument is that you actually answer the comment or criticism your spouse makes. It sounds easy enough. But it’s not always. Too often we read into words, things that were never untended and things the other person never even thought of. You know how a ventriloquist’s doll speaks words and often they’re cheeky but really it is the ventriloquist putting … Continue reading

Practical Wisdom

So, you want to be smarter? We saw that the Bible tells us the starting point for achieving wisdom. So if we have taken that first step and know the Lord God, then what comes next? We each have different ideas and expectations about what life should be like. But instead of dwelling on our views of life, we need to have God’s view of life. And God has shown us what His view of life is and what He expects of us. ‘He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you … Continue reading

Wisdom and Warnings from Proverbs

The book of Proverbs contains great wisdom. Here is one example. The passage is Proverbs 30:5-9. Over the next couple of days I intend to look at it verse by verse and see what truths can be gleaned from it. Proverbs 30:5 tells us ‘Every word of God is flawless.’ Sometimes people will challenge us, claiming the bible is full of contradictions and errors. This statement is invariably made by those who don’t know God’s words or are repeating what they have heard someone else say. The truth is every part of God’s Word will stand up to the closest … Continue reading

A Six Year Old’s Wisdom

At school my husband and I taught a lesson about God’s command not to eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, Genesis 2:9 The children heard how Adam and Eve disobeyed God and because of that, friendship with God was broken, Genesis 3:1-24. The children learned that God always had a plan to rectify the situation We thought the lesson had gone pretty well, even though I saw some of the children struggling to understand how God could send His Son to make things right again by dying on the cross. In our … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Can Too Much Exercise Make Your Milk Sour?

Several have posed this question to me recently so I thought I would take some time today in the baby blog to answer it. It used to be that conventional wisdom told mothers not to exercise while breastfeeding. When you exercise your body increases the production of lactic acid which would make your milk taste sour to the baby and would either upset her stomach or cause her to reject it. Current research does not really support this idea. The most current research that I’m aware of (and here’s where I admit that I haven’t seen anything on this particular … Continue reading

Gospel Questions: The Word of Wisdom

One question that invariably comes up when one is learning about the Church is that of the Word of Wisdom. In 1833, Joseph Smith received a revelation that coffee, tea, alcohol and other strong drinks are not good for man’s use, and that tobacco was also not healthy. The revelation also contained such advice as to eat meat sparingly except for during the winter or when there was little else to be had, relying instead on grains, fruits, and vegetables. The revelation was at first given as a suggestion, but during Brigham Young’s presidency, it was made a commandment. What … Continue reading

Winter and the Word of Wisdom

The Word of Wisdom outlines things that we can do to better care for our bodies. While the Word of Wisdom outlines many things that we should not take into our bodies (tea, coffee, alcohol, and smoking), it also suggests things that we should be doing to better care for our bodies. There is something about the winter months that seem to make it more difficult to focus on caring for our bodies. The Word of Wisdom emphasizes the importance of eating well. Here are five things you can do in the winter to help you follow the spirit of … Continue reading

The Word of Wisdom and Your Example to Your Children

When we think about our children and the responsibilities that we have as parents we often focus on how they are doing spiritually, socially and academically. We want our children to be healthy, but often do not stop to think about the habits that we are teaching our children when they are young. The Family: A Proclamation to the World states: “Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. ‘Children are an heritage of the Lord’ (Psalms 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and … Continue reading
