The Ten Commandments Series: The Tenth Commandment

We bring our series to a close by examining the tenth commandment, which is found in the Book of Exodus 20: 17 and reads: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s. Out of all ten, this commandment is the one that probably confused me the most when I was a child. “Covet” is kind of an odd word, and the meaning isn’t immediately clear. My mom explained it to me in this way – … Continue reading

The Ten Commandments Series: The Sixth Commandment

In Exodus, chapter twenty, verse thirteen, we read: Thou shalt not kill. This seems like a very cut and dried commandment. There’s not a lot to be questioned there. But why is it, then, that this commandment is broken countless times every day in this world of ours? People kill for many different reasons. Sometimes it’s out of fear, anger, or the need for revenge. Other times, it’s out of greed or the fear of being caught. There are those who are evil who love to kill for the sake of killing itself, for the feeling of power it gives … Continue reading

The Ten Commandments Series: The Fifth Commandment

In Exodus chapter twenty, verse twelve we read: Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. We have all been given parents, not only to bring us into this world, but to raise us according to the light and knowledge they have been given. It is the parents’ job to teach us the Gospel, keep us fed and clothed, and to give us a sense of security in this unsure world. We as children are to be loved and cared for, and when we become parents, … Continue reading

The Ten Commandments Series: The Third Commandment

The third commandment, as found in the Book of Exodus, chapter twenty and verse seven, reads: Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. What exactly does it mean to take His name in vain, and why is this such an important commandment? To take the Lord’s name in vain means to use it when you’re not praying, to use it for a purpose that is not the purpose for which it was meant. When we say someone’s name, we use … Continue reading

The Ten Commandments Series: The Second Commandment

The second commandment, as found in the King James version of the Bible, Exodus 20:4-6 reads: 4. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6. And shewing mercy unto … Continue reading

The Ten Commandments Series: The First Commandment

Let’s take a closer look into each of the Ten Commandments, as found in the King James Version of the Bible, Book of Exodus, Chapter Twenty. The first commandment reads, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” There are several meanings to this simple sentence. First, we are not to worship any other gods. We do not worship Baal, or Asherah, or any of the heathen gods of Biblical times. We worship God, the Eternal Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ. We do not give any allegiance to idols or icons. Secondly, we are to be devoted in our … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review – May 5th – 10th

Life just keeps getting busier! If you weren’t able to join us throughout the week, here’s a recap so you can keep up-to-date on all the great blogs here in LDS. We started the week with “Gospel Questions: What About Those Latte-Drinking Mormons?” A non-member friend of Tristi’s asked her why Mormons can’t drink coffee, and yet, some of them do. We learn about the Word of Wisdom and also a little bit about hypocrisy. We got caught up to speed with our lessons in this week’s “Dinner Discussions,” and then Tristi answered another question from her non-member friend in, … Continue reading
