The Sock Fairy

by Tristi Pinkston | More from this Blogger

socksYou've heard of the Tooth Fairy, the Easter bunny, the Sandman, Santa Claus? Well, there's a new mythical being on the block - the Sock Fairy. By night, she sneaks into bedrooms and places new socks in the drawers. By day, she sorts the laundry and throws the old socks away. If she's really on the ball, she'll get distinctive socks for each member of the family so everyone knows whose socks are whose.

Mothers do a great many thankless jobs. I guess I'm lucky-I do get thanked for the thankless jobs. Sometimes my husband even brings me Ben and Jerry's. But I'm frequently amazed at how many little things a mother needs to oversee. I used to think that mothers primarily washed dishes, made meals, and scrubbed toilets. But there's so much more to think about, little tidbits of things like: do we have Band-Aids? Which child doesn't like milk on their cereal? Which child throws up if they eat macaroni and cheese? Did that particular child put on a Pull-Up before they went to bed? Which brand of toothpaste was too spicy? Will this shampoo burn the children's eyes? It goes on and on. Today, as I'm sure you guessed, my task was to buy new socks. And as an LDS mother, I have a great many feet to sock.

This was an interesting task. I wanted every set of socks to look different. But I wanted all the socks within the same package to be the same. For instance, rather than buying my daughter the socks in pretty pastel colors, I bought all white. You know you can never find that other pink sock when you want it. One son's socks have blue stitching on the toes, and the other's have green stitching. My husband's are just huge (no one will ever mistake his) and the baby's are quite small. Mine say "No Nonsense" across the toes in gray lettering. With any luck, no one will get confused as to the ownership of the socks in question, and we'll be able to find matches because they're all the same within a size.

Tomorrow I shall wake up my children with the joyous news that the Sock Fairy came and brought presents! How exciting!

Well, it should be. My daughter got new underwear, too.
