The Scout Committee

The scout committee is an important part of having a functioning scouting program in your ward. While it is possible for a scoutmaster to run everything himself, it is not the way that the program is supposed to run. One of the biggest reasons is that it leads to burnout of scoutmasters. Being a scoutmaster is a lot of work, and it is nice to for him to have some help with organizing and running the troop. The scout committee is there to help out when needed.

The scout committee can help with organizing and finding merit badge counselors. The merit badge counselors work with the boys and check off the requirements for the badges in their specialties. It is important that the scoutmaster is not the only person who is helping the boys earn merit badges.

Another area that the scout committee can help is with record keeping. One person can be in charge of tracking the merit badges that have been earned, and other issues related to advancement. This person can mention to the scoutmaster if there is a certain area that many of the scouts need to work on in order to advance. Another person can be in charge of the charter and the enrollment of new boys throughout the year. There is a lot of paperwork with this calling. It is nice to have a person specifically assigned to this area.

The scouting committee can also help with fundraising (one project allowed a year), with campouts and other activities. The scout committee helps to make sure everything goes smoothly. They do not need to attend every activity, but they should show their support when they can. The scout committee should be separate from the Cub Scout committee, but some wards combine the rolls of enrollment and advancement people.

One fundraiser a year? Must be a big one! :-)

Usually it is to help to pay for Scout camp. The church helps out with enrollment fees and insurance and stuff. Generally most of the costs for camping is covered by the church as well. Usually the boys just have to bring their own food for some of the meals. Gear is loaned (by other members) to the boys who don't have any. So there really isn't a huge amount of cost that the boys have to cover. That is why there is only one allowed a year. Many of the wards don't even do that.

How nice that your church funds them! I shelled out over $200 for David to go to summer camp this year. Well, he covered about $80 in fundraising, but we had to come up with the rest. It was worth it though ;-).
