When Scouts Choose Not to Come

Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are wonderful programs that have been adopted by the Church to help encourage our young men to learn leadership skills, responsibility, respect, and other things that will prepare them to receive the Priesthood, serve missions, and be effective fathers later on. As a Cub Scout leader, I have seen the maturity in my own son as he reaches for new goals and the self-esteem that has been increased as he participates in the program. I think it’s a powerful teaching method and that all boys should be actively involved in their local Scouting chapter. That … Continue reading

Young Men: Scouting Outings

The scouting program recommends that the boys have at least one camp out or Saturday hike each month. This can be difficult to plan and execute every month. However, the fall is an excellent time to go on extended day hikes. The weather has cooled down and the foliage is truly beautiful to behold. If you plan on taking your boys hiking, you need to make sure that you do it in area that is safe from hunters and hunting. Additionally you should wear bright colors to let hunters know that you are there, just in case someone wanders away … Continue reading

Serving in Scouts

I grew up with three sisters and not a brother in the bunch. Surprise, surprise – I ended up having three sons, and it’s been an adventure trying to figure out what to do with them. This last December when my oldest boy turned eight, I was asked to serve as the Wolf Scout leader. I figured this would come eventually – with three boys, what are the odds – but the call still caught me off-guard. “I’ve never done anything like this,” I stammered to the member of the Bishopric who asked me to fill the call. “You’ll learn,” … Continue reading

The Scout Committee

The scout committee is an important part of having a functioning scouting program in your ward. While it is possible for a scoutmaster to run everything himself, it is not the way that the program is supposed to run. One of the biggest reasons is that it leads to burnout of scoutmasters. Being a scoutmaster is a lot of work, and it is nice to for him to have some help with organizing and running the troop. The scout committee is there to help out when needed. The scout committee can help with organizing and finding merit badge counselors. The … Continue reading

Attending Round Table

I’ve been a Cub Scout leader since last December, but I never attended Round Table until last night. Now I’m seeing what I’ve been missing! Round Table is Scout Training that takes place on the district level. You meet together as a district and attend training meetings that fit into two categories –general for the program, which includes things like policies and procedures, keeping Scouting safe, where to get help, and the like, and specific – what each group needs, tailored to them. Last night I attended New Leader Essentials. While none of the information was shockingly new to me, … Continue reading

Do You Have More than One Calling?

In the church, leaders are discouraged from giving people more than one calling. This can become overwhelming and very time consuming. However there are wards and branches that are small enough that it is a necessity to have people serving and helping in more than one area. It can also become difficult if the majority of the stake leadership callings come from your ward as well. Here are five tips to make holding more than one calling possible. 1) The first step is to make sure that you really need to fill the calling. For example I served in the … Continue reading

Ward Activities: Pinewood Derby

Recently my ward had a great ward activity. Every year Cub Scouts holds the Pinewood Derby, and sadly more often than not dads will make the cars for their sons. The competition is very fierce, and often the activity does not end in a positive light. Well our ward had a Pinewood Derby Ben Hurr Style. This was a no holds barred Pinewood Derby. There were very few rules. The first was that your car had to finish to qualify. There was a five pound weight limit. You could have a motorized car. Anyone could enter, so there could be … Continue reading
