The Gift of the Scripturesby Miriam Caldwell | More from this Blogger 26 Sep 2007 03:09 AM One of my favorite things about the scriptures is the stories that are in them. I love the way that the stories about people help me in my daily life. As a child I learned the importance of following the Word of Wisdom as I learned the story of Daniel and his friends. I also learned that I could stand up for my beliefs even when it was difficult. I also loved the story of Daniel in the lion's den and the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Their courage and example helped to develop my strong inner convictions to do what is right, no matter what the consequences. As a parent I love to teach the scripture stories to my children. I know that they can learn the same examples of courage, commitment and belief as I did as a child. The stories and examples still apply to lives today. It is important to realize the scriptures transcend time, and that the teaching and guidance found inside them still applies to each individual today. Additionally the scriptures have been given to us to help us grow closer to our Heavenly Father. We are blessed as we study the words of the scriptures. As we apply the scriptures to our lives, we write the words on our hearts. This can help us to make better choices and to reach out and share the gospel with others. I am reminded of the people of Zarahemla on the Book of Mormon. They did not have the records (scriptures) with them, and as a result they were confused and their language was corrupted. They were so grateful that the Nephites had the records. They realized that they needed to learn more about the gospel and the prophecies of Christ. I hope that you will all take some time today and every day this week to read the scriptures. If you have children I hope that you will take time to teach and discuss the stories with them. These are truly wonderful stories and everyone can be blessed by learning them. Related Articles: General Conference: "The First of the Holy Bible" Is It Hard to Get Into Your Scriptures?
