Creation of an Alcoholic Soda?

Just when you think you have heard it all…I only learned this week about a new product that has apparently been available for a few months. It is a fruity concoction geared toward a younger crowd and it is made by Pabst Brewing Company, located right here in my hometown of Milwaukee. It’s called “Blast” and contains 12 percent alcohol. Not enough to get you drunk (well at least not by drinking just one) but enough to give some “kick.” Pabst describes it as a “premium malt beverage with natural fruit flavors” such as grape, raspberry watermelon, strawberry lemonade and … Continue reading

Home School Blogger Spotlight: Giving Up on a Clean House

I must say that I love the title of this blog. The title, Giving up on a Clean House, is not a statement of the state of her home but a reflection of her state of mind. The mindset that says children and family are more important than dishes in the sick or the socks on the floor. Stacy keeps her head above the piles of laundry (not to say she has piles of laundry) by slowing down a keeping life simple. That simplicity is the focus of her blog which reflects family. She says “I have slowed down, committed … Continue reading

Education through Recreation

A 2008 study by Temple University found that sensory integration therapy helped children with autistic spectrum disorders to display fewer autistic mannerisms such as repetitive movements or actions and highly structured interests. In fact, 91% of parents of children with autism have found sensory integration methods of treatment more helpful than traditional treatments. They found their children to be reaching more of their goals and progressing in areas of social behavior and functional motor tasks. One particular group, KidSense, is taking this information and running with it. The group, through sponsorship and private donations, is building sensory playgrounds for children … Continue reading

Easter Eggheads and Other Grassy Creations

It’s time for some frivolous fun! If you and your preschooler are into growing things but don’t want a garden, you can grow some wacky spring critters. To create an Easter egghead, take one egg and crack it in the middle. Use the inside and scramble it – yum! Then take the least-broken half of the egg, place it in an egg cup, and fill it most of the way with soil. Sprinkle some grass seeds on top of the soil, then add another thin layer of soil. Wet the soil slightly. Brush off any residual dirt. Give the egg … Continue reading

Sports and Recreation

Some women significantly reduce their workload, exercise and activity level during pregnancy. Some women have to because of a high risk pregnancy and others have always been taught that this is the right thing to do to keep both mom and baby healthy. But a growing number of women are of the mindset that pregnancy doesn’t have to slow you down at all, at least until the sheer size and weight of the baby in the final trimester begins to get in the way. Research shows that exercise is safe and healthy for pregnant women. We know more about what … Continue reading

Toddler Creations

I love how creative my son is. Has your toddler built a tower out of blocks lately? Have they decorated the refrigerator with magnets or stickers? Have you shown them how to glue pieces of paper together? Have they drawn with markers on some of their toys or books? I call these “toddler creations” and I love to collect and photograph them. I want to remember, years from now, what toddler creations my son has made. I want to show off his creative ideas in his scrapbook. I want to share his creativity with our friends and family by letting … Continue reading

Easy Easter Candy Creations

What does the Easter Bunny stuff your kids’ baskets with? My daughter typically scores mass amounts of chocolate, jellybeans and a farm’s worth of Peeps. While candy is a staple in eggs and baskets around the holiday, it’s also great Easter craft material. The following simple candy crafts are ones my preschooler looks forward to making each Easter. They are an ideal way to keep kids busy for a couple hours, plus they are relatively inexpensive to make. The best part: The leftover candy can be stashed away for the bunny to use on Easter Sunday. CANDY CRITTERS Materials for … Continue reading
