Scripture Study and My Day

Today has been one of those days where I rattle around, attempting to do a long list of tasks, and not getting anything done. As I sat down at my computer preparing to begin my writing for the day I asked myself what was wrong with me today. And it hit me that I hadn’t read my scriptures yet today. So I went and read them, and prayed, and I’ve felt so much more peaceful today. Daily scripture reading is a chance to focus and to be still. During the time that we read our scriptures each day it shows … Continue reading

Focus during Scripture Study

How do you prepare yourself to study the scriptures? What frame of mind are you in when you kneel to pray? It is important to come prepared so that you can learn as you study and pray. In 3 Nephi 11 we read about how it took the Nephites three times before they were able to understand the voice from heaven. In verses 5 and 6 we read: “And again the third time they did hear the voice, and did open their ears to hear it; and their eyes were toward the sound thereof; and they did look steadfastly towards … Continue reading

Scripture Study – 1 Nephi 17:12-15

Nephi has just been commanded to build a ship, something he’s never done before in his life, but the Lord promised to show him the way, and Nephi is willing to give it a try. He makes a bellows to blow the fire, knowing he’ll need the heat to construct the tools for the building of the ship, and now he comments on the fact that they haven’t built many fires during the time they’ve been in the wilderness. 12. For the Lord had not hitherto suffered that we should make much fire, as we journeyed in the wilderness; for … Continue reading

Scripture Study 1 Nephi 17:1-6

Laman and Lemuel have been chastened (again) and all is well in the little campsite. Food has been provided to the travelers and they are ready to resume their journey. 1. And it came to pass that we did again take our journey in the wilderness; and we did travel nearly eastward from that time forth. And we did travel and wade through much affliction in the wilderness; and our women did bear children in the wilderness. When I first read this, my thought was, “How terrible to give birth out in the wilderness.” But then I realized, it probably … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 13:20-29

Nephi is being shown, in vision, the things that will happen to his seed and the seed of his brethren. He has been greatly concerned as to their future, because of his great love for them. 20. And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld that they did prosper in the land; and I beheld a book, and it was carried forth among them. 21. And the angel said unto me: Knowest thou the meaning of the book? 22. And I said unto him: I know not. 23. And he said: Behold it proceedeth out of the mouth of … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 12:1-10

Nephi is caught up in the vision being shown him by the angel of the Lord. He has seen many things about the coming forth of the Savior, and now he will see things relating to the futures of his descendants and that of his brothers’. 1. And it came to pass that the angel said unto me: Look, and behold thy seed, and also the seed of thy brethren. And I looked and beheld the land of promise; and I beheld multitudes of people, yea, even as it were in number as many as the sand of the sea. … Continue reading

Scripture Study 1 Nephi 8:26-34

Lehi is recounting his vision to his family. He saw a tree filled with marvelous fruit, and leading up to that tree was a rod of iron that led along a straight and narrow path. There were people who wandered up to the tree, but felt ashamed after partaking of the fruit. 26. And I also cast my eyes round about, and beheld, on the other side of the river of water, a great and spacious building; and it stood as it were in the air, high above the earth. This building is on the other side of the water, … Continue reading

Is It Hard to Get into Your Scriptures?

Some of us find it hard to get into our scriptures. No, it’s not because the pages are glued shut or the zipper is stuck! Often, when I sit down to read, I find my mind wandering the minute I turn the page. Instead of reading about Alma, I’m wondering if I’m out of milk and need to run to the store. Instead of commiserating with Nephi, I’m trying to figure out how to keep my children from fighting. What are some ways we can make our scripture time more productive? 1. First, we liken the scriptures unto ourselves. We … Continue reading

Likening the Scriptures to Ourselves

As I’ve prepared for my new, upcoming calling as Seminary teacher (of which, I’m sure, you will hear a lot about!), I have seriously pondered Nephi’s method of teaching. You see, as Nephi instructed his brothers, he states, “I did liken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning” (1 Nephi 19:23). As he put himself in the scriptures, they began to mean more to him. Similarly, it is my hope as Seminary teacher to help my students realize that all scripture – even from the Old Testament – relates to them in some way. … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Blessings of the Elect

Yesterday, we took a look at the signs of the Second Coming of the Savior. Many of those were a bit scary – things like wars, famines, and persecutions. Things like that give the end of the world a bad name! Today, I’d like to explore some of the blessings promised to the elect. We’re going to talk more about the elect tomorrow, but for today, let’s just say that the elect are those who are chosen by God. In a nutshell, it includes sincere Latter-day Saints. That means that the blessings we are about to review are ones that … Continue reading
