The Blessings of Being Set Apart

As members of the Church, we are all given opportunities to serve. Sometimes these opportunities come as assignments, but more often, they come as callings. We serve in our callings for as long as needed or until we are given a new stewardship. Some serve for as many as five years, but it’s rare to hold a position longer than that. When we get a new calling, we are set apart to serve in that calling. This means that the bishop gives us a blessing that we might be guided and inspired as we fulfill our duties in regard to … Continue reading

Relief Society: Reaching Out

It is important to reach out in fellowship to all of the sisters in Relief Society. We can never be sure of the experiences that they are going through or the heartache that they are carrying with them. It is important to think carefully about what you say to other sand how you reach out to include them. One type of sister is the brand new sister to Relief Society. This may mean that she has just graduated from high school and is moving up from young women’s. She may feel awkward among all the grown-ups and unsure of what … Continue reading

Relief Society: Visiting Teaching Less Active Sisters

Visiting teaching is one of the most important functions of Relief Society. It allows friendships to be built, but it is also a system for the president to be sure that individual needs are being met. It fosters close ties and makes it easy for people to reach out and offer service to those around them. If you are visiting teaching a less active member you may need to treat the visits differently. First it is important to follow the sister’s lead. She may not be comfortable with a gospel message, but be open to visits on a regular basis. … Continue reading

Relief Society: A New Presidency

One of the wonderful things about the church is that most callings do not last forever. This means that leadership positions do change. Often when a presidency changes, the way the program is operated will change slightly. This can happen even when both the previous and current presidents are following all of the guidelines. This is because leaders have different areas that they choose to emphasize. When your Relief Society presidency changes it is important to support your new president. She is doing her best to serve you. Things may change, but this is not always a negative thing. You … Continue reading

Relief Society: Suggestions for Compassionate Service

Compassionate service is one of the key roles that the Relief Society has in each ward. The Relief Society is there to step in as needed and to help those who are in need of help in times of trial and sickness. Relief Society: “Feed My Sheep”

In her talk “Feed My Sheep” Sister Silvia H. Allred speaks about visiting teaching. She opens her talk by sharing her testimony. Sister Allred then goes on to explain that as a presidency they have spent time together studying and fasting to understand the purposes of Relief Society. She explains that one way that we can offer relief is through visiting teaching. Relief Society: Nurturing Others

It is important to recognize and value the nurturing qualities of women. Lately, it seems to me, that the gentler qualities of helping, supporting and serving others are looked down on. Many people would see these as a sign of weakness or a failure to reach one’s full potential. It is important to realize that these qualities have been given to us for a reason. As sisters in Relief Society, it is important to realize the blessings of these qualities. It is through service to others that we can learn to love them. It is through supporting and helping those … Continue reading

Relief Society: Visiting Teaching Blessings

Today I had a great visiting teaching visit. I woke up late this morning only to realize I had a doctor’s appointment that I had forgotten about. So I hurried and got the kids dressed and headed out the door. Since we were late I left the breakfast dished on the table. My living room was still a little messy from family home evening, so I figured I would clean it when I got home. After the appointment I went and ran some errands and did some grocery shopping. I arrived home to see my visiting teacher sitting in front … Continue reading
