The Blessings of Being Set Apart

As members of the Church, we are all given opportunities to serve. Sometimes these opportunities come as assignments, but more often, they come as callings. We serve in our callings for as long as needed or until we are given a new stewardship. Some serve for as many as five years, but it’s rare to hold a position longer than that. When we get a new calling, we are set apart to serve in that calling. This means that the bishop gives us a blessing that we might be guided and inspired as we fulfill our duties in regard to … Continue reading

Church Callings: Committee Member

There are a variety of committees that function within the church. At first these callings may not seem to be of much importance, but when you are on a committee the work that you do is usually behind the scenes. However, you will do quite a bit of work. You may serve on the Enrichment committee, the activities committee (at the ward or stake level) or on a public relations committee each of these will require you to do different things. Committees are usually responsible for planning activities or events that take place. You will likely meet with your committee … Continue reading

Counting Blessings – Kerry Blair

Best-selling LDS fiction author Kerry Blair tries her hand at nonfiction in “Counting Blessings,” a newly released collection of thoughts and musings from Kerry’s creative brain. I had the opportunity to pick up a few copies at my local bookstore before they were even on the shelf – they had to go get them out of the box for me, they were so new. We start the collection with “It’s About Time,” as Kerry thinks about her upcoming birthday and the significance we tend to put on time. “My Mother’s Days Are All Wet” tells us of the experiences she’s … Continue reading

The Blessings of Callings

It is important to realize that at some point that you may have a calling that you really just do not feel like doing. Or you may have a point in your calling when you do not want to do it anymore. This is a part of human nature. There are callings which some people dread (like nursery) while others simply love serving there. It is important to realize that callings can help us learn and to grow. One example from my own life is when I was called to serve on the Enrichment committee a few years ago. I … Continue reading

How Heavy is Your Load?

Yesterday, our high councilman came to speak to us in Sacrament meeting. I have to be honest and say that through most of his talk I was in the hallway trying to bounce a baby boy to sleep. He finally did, so I snuck back in for the last 10 minutes of his talk. He shared a story that I thought was powerful, and made me think. He said that Elder Bednar came to visit at a recent regional conference in our area and shared a story that he wanted to share with us. Now, he was paraphrasing Elder Bednar, … Continue reading

Saying No to a Calling

In the church, I have to admit that I have been jaded in the past about callings. There have been times in my life where the Bishop barely knows us and has given us callings that I felt were too time intensive, and too much of a sacrifice for our family. But, with that being said, I do have a testimony that everything comes from the Lord for a reason, and I would never turn down a calling. When my husband was in graduate school, there was a time where I wanted to say no. But, my faith in the … Continue reading

Relief Society: A New Presidency

One of the wonderful things about the church is that most callings do not last forever. This means that leadership positions do change. Often when a presidency changes, the way the program is operated will change slightly. This can happen even when both the previous and current presidents are following all of the guidelines. This is because leaders have different areas that they choose to emphasize. When your Relief Society presidency changes it is important to support your new president. She is doing her best to serve you. Things may change, but this is not always a negative thing. You … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review – March 10th-15th

We’ve had another great week here in LDS. If you weren’t able to join us each day, here’s a summary so you can catch up on what you missed. We started the week with “Teaching Our Children to Sustain the Prophet.” The best way for us to go about this is by setting them a positive example and making sure that the words we speak about our leaders are supportive. In “Is Your Calling Stretching You Too Thin?” we discuss how we can sometimes be pulled in so many different directions between our family responsibilities and our church callings, we … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review: December 24th – 29th

Too busy this holiday season to visit us here in LDS? Not to worry – the Week in Review will help you catch up on the things you missed. In “Christmas Angels Drive Comcast Trucks,” Tristi tells of seeing a man in a truck tow some stranded shoppers off a patch of ice, reminding us to take the time to notice the needs of others and do what we can to help. “Finding Gratitude” shares ways to stay focused on our blessings during the stress and chaos of the holiday season, including writing our blessings down in our journals. “Mourn … Continue reading

When It’s Time to Be Released

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has no paid clergy, and all the teachers and auxiliary leaders are volunteers. But they aren’t volunteers in the traditional sense – there was no gathering in which someone said, “We need a bishop!” and four hands went up. No, rather, people are chosen for their callings in a process of prayer, and through the guidance of the Spirit, they are assigned to various positions by the authorities of the Church. When you are extended a calling, you can be sure that much thought and prayer went into that assignment, and, even … Continue reading
