Adapting to the Holidays as a Married Couple

Our neighborhood held trick-or-treating last night to avoid going out on the Sabbath, and my kids had a ton of fun dressing up and heading out to collect their loot. I took them around, and my husband stayed home to hand out candy to those who came to our house. This is very representative of our personality styles. I’m the one who likes to go out and do things. I can more comfortably navigate my way through social circumstances, and because I’m the “mean” parent, I can herd four overly excited children up and down the street. My husband likes … Continue reading

RS/EQ: The Sabbath – A Delight

As we head into the 2008 course of study for Relief Society and Priesthood, I’m excited to think about studying the words of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Before we begin, however, I’d like to finish up our series on the lessons provided by Spencer W. Kimball. Lesson #16 in the book is entitled, “The Sabbath—A Delight.” How often do we think of the Sabbath as being a delight? I generally think of it with a mixture of fear and trembling, but I need to change that perception. President Kimball begins his lesson by sharing a story from a time when … Continue reading

Remember the Sabbath

The Sabbath is a day that we take time to worship Christ. It is important to prepare ourselves for this wonderful day of rest and worship. Many people mistakenly leave church at church and only focus on the gospel on Sunday, but in order to truly be ready for the Sabbath, we need to focus on the gospel throughout the week. As we pray each day it is important to take time to reflect on the things we need to repent of or to focus more on. This focus helps us when it comes time to take the Sacrament and … Continue reading

Making the Most of Your Saturdays

My husband often complains that he does not really get a weekend. It can be frustrating to find time to do things with family over the weekend, especially if you are attending church and keeping the Sabbath day holy. We both love that Sunday is a day that we set aside to honor the Lord, but it does make Saturday a little bit more hectic than it could be if we had two days to accomplish everything we want to on Saturday. Here are five tips to help make the most of your Saturdays. 1) If possible you can try … Continue reading

The Sabbath Day

We have been commanded to set aside the Sabbath day as a day of rest. It is a day to worship the Lord and remember all the things that He has given to us. It is a day to take the time to be together with your family. It is a day to contemplate and consider the many aspects of the gospel. Are there some Sundays when you start the day more tired than you began it? Do you struggle with the ways to help your children keep the Sabbath Day holy? Do you feel like you spend the entire … Continue reading

The Sunday Bulletin

Every Sunday morning we are usually in such a rush to get to church that by the time we arrive, songs have already broken out and I don’t take the opportunity to read my bulletin. Sometimes my bulletin serves as a coaster for my tea and becomes an object for sermon notes and, I admit, doodling. Since our pastor usually makes announcements of upcoming events from the pulpit, I typically don’t think to look through the bulletin since our church also has a website should I become forgetful about a specific event date. When visiting a church for the first … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: The ‘Burden’ of the Sabbath

Lesson 10 this week focuses on the lightness of the Savior’s yoke. At first, I had a hard time with the section included in the lesson on the Sabbath day (Matthew 12:1-13). I had difficulty relating the two together, and had to ponder it for some time (actually, several days, since I read the entire lesson on Sunday). However, as I read what the Savior taught as the purpose of the Sabbath, I came to understand how this relates to a light and easy yoke. First, of course, you must understand that the Pharisees followed the traditions of the elders, … Continue reading

Forgetting about God

As Israel was preparing to head towards the new land Moses gave them God’s commandments. You can find these in Deuteronomy 5. Deuteronomy 6 expands on these commandments but it is not just for the people of Israel but all of us who profess to follow the Lord God. Some points to note are that keeping God’s commands would result in a long, full life and great blessing. verses 2-3. However Israel was not only to keep God’s commands but to teach them, verse 7. They were to be an integral part of everyday life. God and his commands were … Continue reading

Tender Mercies: Stories to Stir the Soul – Joy Robinson

“Tender Mercies: Stories to Stir the Soul” is a beautiful compilation book by Joy Robinson in which she has gathered stories from men and women from various different backgrounds that show how the Lord is mindful of us in our every need and how He showers us with tender mercies constantly. Stories in this uplifting volume include the account of a woman whose heart was touched upon hearing of the children who are taken from abusive homes and placed in foster care, often with just the clothing on their backs. Dinner Discussions 2008 Week 28

This week’s dinner discussions are based lesson twenty-eight in the manuals. The Primary is one lesson behind. You may need to adjust the discussions if your ward is behind a week due to Stake Conference. Be sure to make these discussions a positive and uplifting experience for everyone. If you have a child in Nursery or Sunbeams he learned about the importance of praying together as a family. The children learned the story of Jesus praying with the Nephites in the Book of Mormon. They also talked about the blessings that come with having family prayer. You may want to … Continue reading
