Alec Loorz and Kids vs. Global Warming

I always find it touching when I read about young people who are so concerned about environmental issues that they do something. Alec Loorz, a sophomore at El Camino High School in Ventura, Cali, is one of those young people trying to make a difference. Alec saw the Al Gore documentary An Inconvenient Truth when he was 12 years old. The film touched him so much that he applied to be one of the certified presenters to give the slideshow about the film. However, Alec’s application was rejected, perhaps because of his age. But, he wasn’t going to give up … Continue reading

Relief Society: Supporting the Enrichment Committee

Tonight was our quarterly Enrichment meeting. It was a lot of fun, with a great Polar Express theme. We had tickets, boarded a train in the gym, and received candy. There was even a conductor that shepherded us to the various stops along the way. As I was at the activity enjoying the company of the sisters of the ward, I realized how much goes into the preparation of each of these activities. I used to serve on the Enrichment committee, and there really is a lot of work that goes into each activity. There is planning, setting up, cleaning … Continue reading

More Ways You Can Protect Your Camera While on Vacation

In my previous blog I listed ways you could protect your camera while vacationing in a place with frigid temperatures. This blog is tailored to help those of you who are planning to take your camera to a tropical location. While the weather might be pleasant other elements could prove detrimental to your camera—-if you are not prepared. Before you head off on your island getaway consider purchasing a lens adapter and a skylight filter. Each provides added protection from the elements for both the lens barrel and the lens itself. Also, you’ll want to make sure your camera bag … Continue reading

Young Women: Thanking Your Leaders

The summer is an extremely busy time for young women’s leaders. It can be quite stressful for the leaders to spend time away from their families for camp and then youth conference. This is in addition to the time spent each week on Sundays and Wednesday evenings. Now would be a great time to let your young women’s leaders know how much you appreciate all the time that they spend serving. Here are three ideas: 1) You could have your daughter write a note of appreciation and take a plate of cookies by the leaders home. This is a great … Continue reading

Relief Society Presidents: Barbara B. Smith

As the first Relief Society president born in the twentieth century, Barbara Bradshaw Smith found her ten year term filled with unrest as the proposed Equal Rights Amendment was discussed and finally defeated. Her time as President was marked by her determination to stand for women’s rights, albeit not in the same manner viewed by the world. Born on January 26, 1922 in Salt Lake City, Utah, Barbara’s attending physician was her maternal grandmother, a woman whose example highly influenced her granddaughter. She was the third of six children born to Dorothy Mills and Dan Delos Bradshaw, parents who taught … Continue reading

What is Homesteading?

Anyone who is interested in living frugally can learn a lot from those who are living a homesteading life. But what exactly is homesteading, and how can we adapt some of the usual homesteading practices to our frugal lifestyle? Read on for the basics. While homesteading refers to anyone who wants to live a self-sustaining lifestyle and get “back to the land,” there are different degrees of homesteading. Some homesteaders choose to live completely “off of the grid,” providing for their families by raising, growing, making and trading the things they need. Others adapt some homesteading practices but do not … Continue reading

The Blessings of Callings

It is important to realize that at some point that you may have a calling that you really just do not feel like doing. Or you may have a point in your calling when you do not want to do it anymore. This is a part of human nature. There are callings which some people dread (like nursery) while others simply love serving there. It is important to realize that callings can help us learn and to grow. One example from my own life is when I was called to serve on the Enrichment committee a few years ago. I … Continue reading

General Conference: “O Be Wise”

In his talk “O Be Wise” Elder M Russell Ballard speaks about the importance of finding the proper balance as you strive to do your callings in the church. He shares the story of Jacob, from the Book of Mormon, who strove to teach his people all he could, and his finals word of counsel were to be wise. Elder Ballard goes on to talk about the importance of fulfilling your callings. He then talks about people who become so wrapped up in their callings that their lives become out of balance. At times people may neglect their family or … Continue reading
