Special Needs Blog Week in Review – April 1 – 7, 2012

Every week, the Special Needs Blog Week in Review gives you a brief description of all of the blogs that appeared there in the past seven days. This is a good way to find the blogs that you missed, but perhaps would have liked to read when they first appeared. The Special Needs Podcast Roundup went up on April 2, 2012. This time, I’d like to point out an episode of NPR’s “All Things Considered”. The episode is called “N.Y. Preschool Starts DNA Testing for Admission”. If something in the child’s DNA makes the school think that he or she … Continue reading

Effective Family Prayer

Family prayer is one of the best ways that you can keep your family spiritually grounded. It gives you the opportunity to invite the spirit into your home and your family’s lives each day. It also gives you the opportunity to teach your children how to pray and what to pray for. Family prayer helps you to show your children how much Heavenly Father loves them, and where the gospel stands as a priority in your life. If you are having problems with holding family prayers, you may need to ask yourself a few questions in order to come up … Continue reading

Do You Find Family Prayer Frustrating?

Family prayer can often seem to be a struggle. It really does not matter what age your children are. The young toddlers seem to love running around the room as soon as you start praying. The children in elementary school seem to poke each other if they are sitting too close together, and the teenagers just complain in general. Of course you will not experience these problems every time you have family prayer, but it can get frustrating. It is important to remember what you are accomplishing when you pray together as a family. Even though your children may not … Continue reading

Mistaken Cremation

In what was already a parents’ worst nightmare, events that seemed to be at their worst possible point took a turn for the worse. Little Jaylen Talley, only 14 months old, died from apparent breathing problems due to an alleged undiagnosed heart defect. On May 24, his parents could tell something was wrong. They called 911, and Jaylen’s father tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate the toddler. Jaylen later died at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. As if it wasn’t enough that these parents lost their son, something worse happened: their son was accidentally cremated. The Talleys had been planning a … Continue reading

Is it Time for a Garage Sale or Yard Sale?

As we purge, do spring cleaning, organize and purge some more, we are left trying to find something to do with all the items we’ve decided we no longer need. Donating to charity is great and many of us go this route first. However, there are times when we feel like we need to get something back from the items we intend to discard. Consignment shops work too, as does Freecycle, but this time of year, you may also find yourself considering the benefits of a garage sale or yard sale. It can seem a bit overwhelming, but if you … Continue reading

Dinner Discussions 2008 Week 1

It is the first week of the New Year. This is a great week, because everyone should have received the same lessons. You may also want to discuss your goals with your family. This would actually be a good discussion to have once a month throughout the entire year. If you have a child in Nursery or Sunbeams he learned that we are children of our Heavenly Father. The lesson used the story of Moses in the Bulrushes to illustrate the Heavenly Father is watching over us. This is an important concept for your children to grasp, so you may … Continue reading

First Presidency Message: The Master Bridge Builder

Our First Presidency Message for the month of January comes from Thomas S. Monson. He speaks of reading a book called “The Way to the Western Sea” by David S. Lavender about the travels of Lewis and Clark. As he read of the explorers crossing the raging waters, President Monson says that he pondered upon bridges that might have eased their way. He goes on to state that all of us are travelers on this journey through life, and that the bridges were put there by our loving Savior who went before us and walked the path, scouting out for … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: The Flesh is Weak

When Jesus spent the night in Gethsemane, bearing upon Himself the sins of the world, He asked only one thing of His disciples: that they stay awake. He woke them twice, and found them asleep. As He pled for their support, He acknowledge that “the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41) Isn’t that the way it is with all of us? As we struggle with our daily trials, we truly long to be more Christlike. We strive to make the changes that are needed for us to be closer to Him. We try to repent … Continue reading
