Stop Your Prayers from Becoming Routineby Miriam Caldwell | More from this Blogger 03 Apr 2009 10:00 AM All too often I allow my prayers to become routine. My concerns seem to be the same over periods of time, and I find myself asking for the same things, and giving thanks for the same things. When my prayers become routine like this, I worry that they are not as effective as they should be. Here are some things I do to try and improve my personal prayers. I often pray silently, especially when I am not alone. If I find that my prayers are routine then I make sure that I find a good place where I am alone and say my prayers out aloud. As I listen to the words I am saying, it is easier for me to articulate my concerns questions, and feelings. It is also easier for me to express my gratitude in a way that is truly meaningful. Another thing that helps is to give myself more time to pray. I make sure to allow myself at least ten minutes just to pray in the morning or in the evenings. I often cannot swing both, but the extra time allows me to carefully contemplate the things that I am saying, and it gives me an opportunity to listen for the answer or for me to reflect on a situation or problem. Additionally I don't say my morning prayer first thing in the morning. I often do pray as soon as I get out of bed, but frankly I am still usually drifting in and out of coherent thought at the time. If this happens I make sure to make time for a real morning prayer later in the morning, usually after I have my daughter off to school. This helps me to be more present when I am praying. Finally I prepare myself by studying the scriptures and writing in my journal on a regular basis. Both of these activities help me to feel closer to the Lord. They also allow for self-reflection so that I can find the areas in my life that need improvement. It helps me to find areas that I can improve in.
