Preparedness and Finances

One important aspect of preparing yourself and your family is financial preparedness. The church urges us to avoid debt, and to get out of debt as quickly as possible. It also teaches us to take financial responsibility for ourselves by saving money for emergencies and planning for retirement. If you have a lot of debt, it is important to focus on getting out of debt as much as you can. You can limit your discretionary spending and begin to budget to do this. If you need help setting up your budget or learning how to manage your money, you can … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Provident Living – Applying Principles of Self-Reliance and Preparedness

Lesson #11 in our Spencer W. Kimball manual this year was entitled, “Provident Living – Applying Principles of Self-Reliance and Preparedness.” President Kimball had the opportunity to work both at a bank and a store before his call to the apostleship, and he was awestruck at the amount of things people bought on credit. (In this lesson, he uses the phrase “on time,” meaning that the payments would be made over time, but I prefer to say “on credit,” so as to be perfectly clear.) He said it amazed him to see people walk down the street wearing clothes and … Continue reading

December Preparedness Goals

November has flown by and it is into December. There is still time to make preparedness goals and to achieve them this month. In November we did great with family scripture study in the morning. We still need to bring our flour and sugar levels up. We did not use white beans, but I did delve into our food storage and use items that we had in new ways. As you consider giving your family presents this year, consider the gift of food storage. If you have grown children or are just starting out yourself, there is a starter kit … Continue reading

November Preparedness Goals

In continuing with the Preparedness Challenge, I am going to report on how my family did with our October preparedness goals and share our new goals for November. I would love to hear your progress as well as any tips that you may have had. As a family we went on a two and a half mile hike. This was enjoyable, but took longer than I thought. Two year olds do not have very long legs. However, I was reassured that through passing the children between us to carry at times, that we could hike longer if necessary. I also … Continue reading

October Preparedness Goals

When it comes to preparedness there are so many aspects to cover. Each month I am going to write a blog with a goal in each area of preparedness. The areas I feel are important are emergency preparedness, food storage, physical preparedness, and spiritual preparedness. You can join in my family’s preparedness efforts or offer suggestions of your own. Emergency preparedness is essential. In reality more people actually use the supplies they have stored for emergencies then anything else. This month my goal is to store two week’s worth of water for my family. That equals a gallon per person … Continue reading

Are You Spiritually Prepared?

In my stake there has been a lot of focus on preparedness lately. There has also been this focus in several other stakes. It is important to be prepared to deal with financial and physical emergencies. The weather is unpredictable, as is the job market. However, it is even more important to be spiritual prepared to meet the crises that may arrive in our lives. These could vary from job loss to depression to loss of a family member. It could also be dealing with temptation or a sudden divorce. It is important to have a testimony that is constantly … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Priorities and Preparedness

When we study the principle of self-reliance, we tend to think of it as a worldly law. And yet, the scriptures clearly tell us that Heavenly Father has never given a law that is temporal; all commandments are spiritual in nature (see D&C 29:34). How, then, is a law regarding our worldly state spiritual? President Kimball clearly states that “the highest achievement of spirituality comes as we conquer the flesh.” As we overcome our earthly bodies and worldly desires, we grow to be more spiritual beings. We generally think of this when we consider overcoming habits, but it applies to … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Preparedness Night

It is a good idea to have a family home evening devoted to family preparedness and safety at least once year. This week’s lesson is based on the theme of safety and preparedness. You can easily adapt the activities to fit the needs of your family. It is important to cover the basics whether you have toddlers or teenagers. You can open the lesson by reading Doctrine and Covenants 109:8. Then you can talk about the different things that your family might want to prepare for. You can talk about the importance of spiritual preparedness as well as temporal preparedness. … Continue reading

Teaching Children Self Reliance

Often when we think about preparedness and self-reliance the focus turns to food storage and a financial reserve, but have you prepared your children for adulthood? Have you taught them self-reliance? These are important skills to teach your children. It is not fun for a child to go off to college and not know the basic skills to take care of their laundry or how to cook. But there are additionally skills you should teach your children as well. One important skill that you should be teaching your children is to manage money well. You can do this in many … Continue reading

Welcome to our Week in Review! If you didn’t have the chance to join us every day here in LDS, here’s your opportunity to get caught up. Oaks’ conference talk on “Testimony.” Is your teen trying to decide whether or not to add seminary to his schedule? “Choose to Attend Seminary” will help him see that the blessings will be great if he’ll take that extra time to study the gospel more deeply. We continued … Continue reading
