Five Tips for Speaking in Sacrament Meeting

You pick up the phone and unexpectedly you receive the dreaded call. You have been asked to speak in Sacrament meeting in a week or two. This can be a scary prospect for some, while others thrive with the extra attention. In either case it means extra work in the coming weeks as you strive to prepare the talk. Here are five tips to help make your talk a success. 1) The first tip is to relax. I am surprised at the number of people who seem completely self confident when interacting with others who completely freeze when speaking to … Continue reading

Punctuality, Sacrament, and Small Kids

One of the first acting principles I learned when I joined the church was not a gospel principle; it was the concept of Mormon Standard Time. As a punctual person, the constant lateness grated on my nerves. It took me well over a year to adapt to the more laid back approach. I suppose the Lord must have decided I needed to learn patience! Now that I have three children, getting out the door for anything – especially church – seems to take major effort. And given the fact that most of the Sacrament meetings I have attended start five … Continue reading

The Mechanics of a Sacrament Talk

One of my favorite classes in college was a public speaking course I took in my senior year. In truth, I took it to fulfill a requirement, because it seemed like an easy ‘A’ – and it was (I finished the midterm in about fifteen minutes and missed one or two questions). However, I really enjoyed the class and got a lot out of it. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, we are frequently blessed (that’s the right word, right?) with the opportunity to present talks in Sacrament meeting. I would like to share a … Continue reading

Much Needed Inspiration

This past Sunday in Primary, I became really frustrated. It seems that the past two weeks, the kids have been so irreverent. Obviously, this is something that every primary president probably has to deal with, but I was feeling so frustrated by it after primary that I spent a long time speaking to my counselors about what we can do to increase the reverence in primary. Luckily, we have General Conference this next weekend that will definitely yield some inspiration and guidance, and hopefully give the spiritual energy to tackle such a problem! The kids just seemed to be wiggly, … Continue reading

Senior Missionary Series: Your Farewell

The time has come for you to pack up and leave home. Perhaps it’s still a week or two out from your departure. But sooner or later, you will get the phone call from your bishop, asking you to speak in sacrament meeting before you go. In years past, whole sacrament meetings were devoted to the young man or woman who was leaving. The program was made up entirely of members of their family, their mothers often told funny stories about their childhoods, and the missionary’s favorite musical numbers were performed. Afterwards, the ward would converge on the missionary’s house … Continue reading

Primary Time: Assigning Talks

Children need to be given the chance to speak in Primary. These talks help the children become comfortable speaking in front of others. It really can prepare them for giving talks in Sacrament meeting and teaching lessons at church. One of the key points of having successful talks, prayers and scripture sharing is good communication with the parents. Here are a few tips to make it work better. 1) There are several different ways to assign talks. You may assign them on a rotating basis or you may have the names drawn out of a hat. You may assign a … Continue reading

LDS Family Week in Review: May 27th – June 2nd

Gospel Doctrine: In The Marriage of the King’s Son, we discussed the parable of the wedding feast, in which the only attendees were those from the street. In Render to Caeser the Things Which Are Caesers, we talked about what the Lord wants from us – and it isn’t our money. In Faith to Move Mountains, we considered how the Lord might ask us to move mountains slowly and in His own time. And in The Cursing of the Fig Tree, we talked about what Christ’s blight on a simple plant could teach. Monday, May 28th: In Dinner Discussion 2007 … Continue reading
