Sharing Your Story

Sometimes we hear of people and they speak of their lives and we can think, ‘Wow! I never had anything like that experience.’ We even find it with some of God’s chosen ones like Paul. Paul related his conversion experience to a crowd in Acts 22. If you know the story of Paul, and what happened on the road to Damascus, you might be thinking that’s fine for him but I never had a dramatic conversion experience at all. What I have to say couldn’t be interesting to anyone. Don’t be too sure. One time a young woman was feeling … Continue reading

General Conference: “Gaining a Testimony of Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost”

In his talk “Gaining a Testimony of God the Father; Jesus Christ; and the Holy Ghost,” Elder Robert D Hales, speaks about the importance of having a testimony of the Godhead. He shares that much of his own testimony came when he studied the Articles of Faith as a young boy. He then reviews the First Vision. He explains that Joseph Smith went to the grove to pray, and that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ came and visited him there. Elder Hales then talks specifically about Jesus Christ and his relationship to Heavenly Father. He shares the story of Jesus … Continue reading

General Conference: “Testimony”

In his talk “Testimony” Elder Dallin H Oaks explains what a testimony is and how to gain a testimony. He begins by stating that a testimony “Is a personal witness borne to our souls by the Holy Ghost” about specific gospel principles. He goes on to point out that a testimony is not a sermon or stories that you share from the pulpit. Elder Oaks talks about the knowledge that makes up a testimony. He points out that a spiritual knowledge is different from a physical or scientific knowledge. We gain that spiritual knowledge through the Holy Ghost, as it … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Strengthing Your Testimony

In continuing with the idea of using General Conference talks for family home evening lessons, I’ve pulled some ideas from “Do It Now” and “Three Goals to Guide You.” This lesson will focus on the things that each individual and family needs to be doing to grow spiritually. Then it will focus on the importance of doing those things now, and removing the things that may be standing in your way. This lesson can also be used in conjunction with the Building Your Testimony lesson. You can open your lesson by reviewing the scripture Alma 32:28. This scripture focuses on … Continue reading

Choosing Your Battles at Scripture Time

When we first got married, my husband said he’d like to read the scriptures every day as a family. We actually started the day of our wedding and haven’t missed a day since, except for when he’s been out of town. As the children came along and learned how to read, we’ve incorporated them into the reading, giving them simple verses and helping them as needed. We have one son who, for whatever reason, doesn’t like to read with us about half the time. He’ll fuss and complain, he’ll slur his words like he’s had one too many shots of … Continue reading

Sunday Review: Paul’s Testimony

I know this blog is about a week late, but I had to share. Last Sunday was one of the few Sundays I neglected to read the Gospel Doctrine lesson in advance, so of course I was asked to fill in as last minute substitute. I don’t know how well the Spirit I felt translated to the class, but I felt the Holy Ghost stronger than I have felt during the lesson in awhile. The lesson for the week was Acts 1-5. In that lesson, Paul bears his testimony not once but twice. The first group he testifies to was … Continue reading

Share Your Testimony

How often do you share your testimony? I think it is easy to think of only sharing your testimony when you stand up during a testimony meeting or at the end of a lesson that you are teaching. It is important to bear your testimony during these times, but it is also important that you share your testimony on a regular basis with those around you. Here are three ways that you can share your testimony of the Savior and the gospel with those around you. 1) One easy way to share your testimony is in the way that you … Continue reading

Unlocking The Secrets To Powerful Testimony

When you are seeking to work for God, how do you handle rejection and discouragement? Jesus can teach us a lot about this. Despite the lack of faith of those in His home town, Jesus did not stop doing God’s work. He went from village to village teaching, Mark 6:6. Jesus did not stay where he got no response but moved on to other villages. If we are not getting a response from those close to us, we might need to also move on to tell people where they are more receptive of Jesus. Rather than cutting back on his … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Questioning Your Testimony

Although General Conference has thrown something of a cog into our regular Relief Society and Elder’s Quorum lesson planning (pity whoever is conducting this month, as they didn’t have to prepare a lesson! Unfair!), you should be studying from the Spencer W. Kimball handbook. This week, we are reading Chapter 7, a beautiful lesson on Personal Testimony. As I started off by reading the first section, addressing moments from President Kimball’s life, I was touched by the experience his son had. While on his mission, young Elder Andrew Kimball would frequently be impressed to bear his testimony. Later, he would … Continue reading

Three Ways to Help Your Local Missionaries

When I first joined the church, I loved going on splits with the sister missionaries. Now that I have three small children – and one on the way – getting out is a bit more challenging. At the same time, my circle of contacts at present is mostly limited to other LDS sisters, which gives me few close friends to introduce the missionaries to. I would like to share a few ‘think outside the box’ ways that you can help the missionaries if you find yourself facing similar challenges. Be a people greeter. When you see the missionaries bringing investigators … Continue reading
