Seeking Revelation

There are times in each of our lives, when we must make choices regarding our future. There are times when we are seeking guidance to help us solve a problem that we are facing. We may be looking for a reason for our suffering or simply seeking comfort as we work through our trials. We are able to seek personal revelation through prayer with our Heavenly Father. It is important to realize that prayer is a two way communication, and that as we receive answers, we need to be prepared to act on those answers. We also need to give … Continue reading

Single Parenting: Keeping the Faith When You Are Feeling Down

We all have bad days. You know, the days when you wake up and the kids do not cooperate, a co-worker says something to break your spirit, and you cannot wait until bedtime. Although rushing through my day and waiting with baited breath for the end of the day is no way to go through life, I have done it myself as well. It does not make me feel too good either, but I have been there. I usually end up feeling guilty that I wished for such a thing because life is just too short as it is. On … Continue reading

We Have No Need for Fortune Tellers

In today’s world, we hear a lot about psychics, fortune tellers, clairvoyants and the like who all have the answers to our problems. There is a lot of pressure to hear what our futures hold, to understand the mysteries of life, and to know what direction to take. Many good people have been led away into following after these practices, believing that they need this kind of information in order to survive in this confusing time. We as members of the Church have all the tools we need to make proper, right decisions without the need for these practices. First … Continue reading

Scripture Study – 1 Nephi 15:26-34

Nephi’s rebellious brothers are finally asking him questions about the words their father spake, and he is eagerly answering them. Anxious that his brothers finally see the truthfulness of the Gospel and repent, he has exhorted them with his whole soul. 26. And they said unto me: What meaneth the river of water which our father saw? 27. And I said unto them that the water which my father saw was filthiness; and so much was his mind swallowed up in other things that he beheld not the filthiness of the water. I think it’s interesting that Nephi picked up … Continue reading

Make Your Choice

It is not uncommon to have moments in your life when you are in a pivotal situation. The choice to believe the gospel and to live its principles is one of those moments. You may make the choice once in your life or you may come to crossroads at a few different times in your life. I was born into an LDS family and grew up a member of the church, but there was a conscious point where I decided to embrace the gospel and make it a part of my life. Leading up to my decision, I investigated other … Continue reading

Your Prayers

Are there times when you feel like your prayers are not being heard? This can happen to the best of us. It is important that the Lord is there. He does listen and answers to our prayers. There may be several reasons that you may feel this way. Here is a list of things to consider. 1) Are you taking the time you need to pray? If you hurriedly rush out a prayer because you are late for work, you may not have time to feel as though you are being heard. You may need to schedule a place that … Continue reading

Unencumber Your Life

I have often written about the importance of preparedness, but Bishop Keith B McMullin’s talk “Lay Up in Store” mentioned the importance of simplifying your life as part of preparedness. Bishop McMullin says: “As men of God, we turn from excess to that which edifies, for ‘that which doth not edify is not of God.’ If dealings or involvements or pursuits or schedules detract from putting God first, we must pare back and unencumber our lives.” Since reading this talk on Monday, I have really been thinking about this statement. It has caused me to do quite a bit self-reflection. … Continue reading

From pioneers to the scriptures to helping our youth, this week has brought a great deal of variety. I hope you will find something to help you in your spiritual walk. Paris Calls Barbara

NEWS FLASH: Paris Hilton says she has “found God” and vows to no longer “act dumb.” Hmm… so it was all an act? Or was it an act of God? Let’s ask Barbara Walters. Seems as though the publicity-seeking socialite struck again yesterday when she phoned “View” creator Barbara Walters to get her side of the story out to her adoring fans. About an hour ago, Walters told her co-hosts (and a live television audience) that Hilton “sounded tired but totally aware of what she was saying” (alluding to the fact that many news reports said the hotel heiress was … Continue reading

How to Do a Bible Study

Many people choose to learn about the Bible by starting with Genesis and reading forward until they finish Revelation. The problem with this is most people don’t make it to the end; they often get stuck in some of the Old Testament books and lose interest with who begat whom. Another problem I’ve heard, especially among non-Christians, is refusal to finish reading the Bible out of frustration with God—typically by the book of Job, where the hardships people faced don’t seem to make much sense. The Bible is so much more than a history or story book. To retain what … Continue reading
