Broadening My Personal Scripture Study

When it comes to personal scripture study, I tend to focus on the Book of Mormon. I have read the Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price and the New Testament all the way through. I have read a great deal of the Old Testament, but I seem to focus my personal scripture study on the Book of Mormon or I study by topic. In many ways the Book of Mormon just seems so much more accessible to me. I think this is because it is what my family read during family scripture study when I was growing up. I … Continue reading

LDS General Conference Scripture Citation Index

Have you ever wondered what the modern church leaders have said about a particular scripture verse or story? Now you have no reason to be curious. Two BYU faculty members, Richard C. Galbraith and Stephen W. Liddle, have created an online citation database that links scriptures to Conference talks. This web site can further enhance your daily scripture study, or help you prepare for lessons or talks. Galbraith and Liddle brought their site online a few years ago and have been working constantly to improve it. Rather than searching for a General Conference talk by subject, you can click on … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Technology, Blessings, and Scriptures

Circumstances did not allow for posting these lessons the weeks they were completed. However, it is my hope that you will still be able to take something from them. This week’s Relief Society and Elder’s Quorum lesson from the Spencer W. Kimball manual focuses on the scriptures. This entire lesson was wonderful; when I read it in December, it strengthened my resolve to study and ponder the scriptures, and put me on the road to a more in-depth study program, despite the tugging of small children on my skirts. In the beginning, President Kimball refers to a talk he heard … Continue reading

Scripture Journals

One of my best friends has encouraged me for years to keep a spiritual journal. She urged that I make note of spiritual promptings and blessings. This is a little different from your regular journal in that it is solely comprised of things of the spirit, rather than including the more mundane items on the list. The theory is that, when you are feeling down, you can go to your spiritual journal and be reminded of the many ways Heavenly Father has had a hand in your life. While the big things – prayers about whether or not to marry … Continue reading

Scripture Study & Learning Styles

Have you ever felt as though you weren’t getting the most you could possibly absorb from your scripture study? I’m not talking about the nights you skim over one verse and call it a day. Do you really apply yourself to your scriptures and can’t seem to comprehend them the most possible? Perhaps the problem comes from the fact that your learning style doesn’t mesh with your scripture study technique. There are three basic learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/tactile. When we think of scripture study, we usually envision a person reading and perhaps pausing to ponder the words they … Continue reading

Chronology of the Old Testament

I have a confession to make. My scriptural knowledge is fairly weak in the realm of the Old Testament. That must be why I was called to teach the book for Seminary this year! I have been preparing for the calling all summer, and along the way, have learned a wide variety of things. One of them has dramatically shifted my understanding of the Old Testament. That is: the Old Testament is not in chronological order. I always assumed that the first part of the Bible was like most of the Book of Mormon or New Testament, that each book … Continue reading

Why Memorize?

Yesterday, I suggested that you work on memorizing (or rememorizing) the scripture mastery verses. You may have asked, why? What is the purpose of memorizing scriptures? I would recommend everyone, from the youth down to retired folks, take the time to memorize some scripture. These verses can come in very handy. We know that the Lord speaks to us through scriptures. A non-LDS, Christian friend I know calls the Bible “God’s love letter to us.” What a wonderful way to think of scriptures! We know, too, that the Book of Mormon was written by prophets of old especially for our … Continue reading

General Conference: “How Firm a Foundation”

In his talk “How Firm a Foundation” President Thomas S Monson speaks about the need to develop a deep and lasting faith. He begins by sharing an analogy about the building of wards. He learned that the roads in Western Canada are built on a foundation that is much deeper than most roads. So the roads can withstand weather that would cause other roads to buckle and crack. President Monson then says that just like these roads need a firm foundation to withstand the weather, we need a firm foundation to withstand the trials of life. President Monson says: “We … Continue reading

Sunday Student Preparation

Sunday morning, my Relief Society instructor announced somewhat sheepishly that she had prepared her lesson the night before. She then proceeded to read from the Teachings of the Presidents manual. I prepared myself for a long, boring lesson that I wouldn’t take much from. To my surprise, the class was great, and I wound up making more notes in my manual than I had by studying on my own. A big part of that was due to the fact that several other women in the class had read the lesson beforehand, and had sincere and thoughtful comments. Anyone who has … Continue reading
