LDS Week in Review – March 24th – 29th

Life never seems to get less busy! If you were too swamped to join us here in LDS, here’s your chance to get caught up. We began with an article from Miriam entitled, “Food Storage Items Available Online.” She tells us about the things she found at the Church’s website, including a pamphlet that tells us how to cook the foods we’ve purchased. It’s important that we remember to include foods to flavor our grains and that we not purchase items that family members may be allergic to. At the same time, we can prepare for our spiritual droughts by … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 7:1-5

Lehi has obtained the plates of brass and, moved upon by the spirit, prophesied that the writing thereon would go to his descendants. Nephi and his brothers have settled back in to their tents and think that from now on, they’ll be traveling further into the wilderness. 1. And now I would that ye might know, that after my father, Lehi, had made an end of prophesying concerning his seed, it came to pass that the Lord spake unto him again, saying that it was not meet for him, Lehi, that he should take his family into the wilderness alone; … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 6 and thoughts about the war chapters

To summarize most of the verses in this chapter, Nephi explains that he is not going to record his genealogy on the plates he’s writing, because it’s already recorded elsewhere and he wants to use his plates to record the things of God. He says, in verse four: For the fulness of mine intent is that I may persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, and be saved. 5. Wherefore, the things which are pleasing unto the world I do not write, but the things which are pleasing … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 5:16-22

Lehi finally has the brass plates and is delighted to discover not only the words of the prophets written on them, but his genealogy as well. 16. And thus my father, Lehi, did discover the genealogy of his fathers. And Laban also was a descendant of Joseph, wherefore he and his fathers had kept the records. 17. And now when my father saw all these things, he was filled with the Spirit, and began to prophesy concerning his seed— 18. That these plates of brass should go forth unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people who were of his seed. … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 5:7-15

Nephi and his brothers have returned to their family in the wilderness. Sariah has been very afraid for their safety and questioned her husband for bringing them out into the wilderness. 7. And when we had returned to the tent of my father, behold their joy was full, and my mother was comforted. 8. And she spake, saying: Now I know of a surety that the Lord hath commanded my husband to flee into the wilderness; yea, and I also know of a surety that the Lord hath protected my sons, and delivered them out of the hands of Laban, … Continue reading

Questioning the Lord

While I was working on today’s Scripture Study, which talked about Sariah and her concerns for her sons while they were obtaining the plates of brass, I began to think about the doubts that often creep into our minds and hearts. We live in a world that is focused on materialism and greed, carnal pursuits and fame. As we go through our day, we are bombarded with images and advertising that would lead us to believe that money is everything, morality is old-fashioned, and that we should be actively pursuing our own happiness above everyone else’s. Then we pick up … Continue reading
