LDS Week in Review July 14th – 19th

Just in case you were too busy to join us during the week, here’s a summary to get you all caught up on our doings here in LDS. We began the week with “The Sanctity of the Chapel,” a reminder that our chapels are not merely just another room in the church, but are holy rooms and should be treated with reverence. We then got caught up-to-date with our lessons in our weekly “Dinner Discussions.” “Gaining a Testimony of Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost” is a report on the General Conference address given by Robert D. Hales, … Continue reading

Scripture Study – 1 Nephi 17:31-38

Nephi has been commanded to build a boat to cross the great waters, but Laman and Lemuel are giving him a hard time about it. They refuse to believe that he’s been commanded of the Lord and instead, call him crazy, just like their father. Nephi is now recounting the Lord’s dealings with His children in the past and reminding his brothers that God is in control over all. Speaking of the children of Israel, he says: 31. And it came to pass that according to his word he did destroy them; and according to his word he did lead … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review – May 26th-31st

We had a great week here in LDS. Here’s your weekly summary, just in case you need a chance to catch up. We started off with our “Dinner Discussions,” which helps us stay on track with our lessons throughout the week. Then Miriam talked about “Focusing on Modesty.” Now that summer is near and the weather is warm, the temptation exists to dress in more revealing clothing, and it’s more important than ever to make sure that we all understand the importance of respecting our bodies. “In Memoriam: Religious Martyrs” reminds us of all those who have died to bring … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 16:26-32

Lehi’s family is wandering in the wilderness, and they are starving. The bows have lost their springs, and Nephi’s high quality steel bow was their last chance for survival. When his bow breaks, his brothers begin to murmur, and even Lehi complains against the Lord. But after Nephi speaks to his father and shows him loving respect befitting his position as patriarch of the family and prophet of the Lord, Lehi repents and goes to the Lord to inquire where Nephi should go to look for food. 26. And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord said … Continue reading

Scripture Study – 1 Nephi 15:26-34

Nephi’s rebellious brothers are finally asking him questions about the words their father spake, and he is eagerly answering them. Anxious that his brothers finally see the truthfulness of the Gospel and repent, he has exhorted them with his whole soul. 26. And they said unto me: What meaneth the river of water which our father saw? 27. And I said unto them that the water which my father saw was filthiness; and so much was his mind swallowed up in other things that he beheld not the filthiness of the water. I think it’s interesting that Nephi picked up … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 13:36-40

Nephi is having a vision of the things that will come to pass in the future, specifically as pertaining to his seed. When we left off last time, his guide, the angel, had just told him that the missing portions of the Lord’s word would be hid up until it is time for them to be revealed. 36. And in them (the hidden books) shall be written my gospel, saith the Lamb, and my rock and my salvation. 37. And blessed are they who shall seek to bring forth my Zion at that day, for they shall have the gift … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: All Things According to His Will

The second lesson in our Gospel Doctrine course this year is called “All Things According to His Will” and focuses on Lehi’s departure, with his family, into the wilderness. Our recommended reading is: 1 Nephi 1:4-15, 18-20, 2:1-3: What circumstances led to Lehi’s departure into the wilderness? 1 Nephi 1:19-20, 2:12-13, 16:1-2, also 1 Nephi 2:16, 19: Why were the people so reluctant to hear the words of Lehi and the other prophets who had been sent to teach repentance to them? Why are people so filled with pride that when they are called upon to repent, they become angry … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 11:24-36

Nephi has inquired of the Lord to know the meaning of the vision his father saw. Deep in prayer, Nephi was taken to a high mountain by the Spirit of the Lord and now, with an angel for his guide, is being shown Christ who is to come. 24. And after he had said these words, he said unto me: Look! And I looked, and I beheld the Son of God going forth among the children of men; and I saw many fall down at his feet and worship him. 25. And it came to pass that I beheld that … Continue reading
