Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 14:18-30

Nephi, deep in vision with the angel of the Lord, is being shown the end times of the world and the fate of his descendants. He also sees John the Revelator and learns of his role in warning us about the signs of the second coming. 18. And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me, saying: Look! 19. And I looked and beheld a man, and he was dressed in a white robe. 20. And the angel said unto me: Behold one of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 21. Behold, he shall see and write the … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review: February 4th-9th

We’ve had a lot going on in LDS this week. If you weren’t able to join us, you can catch up by reading this summary and following the links. We began the week, as was fitting, by talking about President Hinckley. Tristi blogged about a website where you can go and sign up to participate in a Book of Mormon reading tribute to President Hinckley. At last count, over 28,000 people have chosen to commemorate the passing of that dear man by studying the scriptures as he asked us to do. Miriam then told us of the selection of Thomas … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: The Vision of the Tree of Life

The third lesson in our Gospel Doctrine course of study for the Book of Mormon is called “The Vision of the Tree of Life.” Our recommended reading for this lesson is: Tree of Life (1 Nephi 8:10, 11:8-25) Fruit of the Tree of Life (1 Nephi 8:10-18, 30; 15:36; Doctrine and Covenants 14:7) Rod of Iron (1 Nephi 8:19-24, 30; 11:25; 15:23-24) Mist of Darkness (1 Nephi 8:23-24; 12:17) River of filthy water (1 Nephi 8:13, 26, 32; 15:26-29) Great and spacious building (1 Nephi 8:26-28, 31, 33; 12:18) Lehi had a vision in which he saw a tree covered … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 3:29-31

All attempts to get the brass plates from Laban have failed, and Laman is out of patience. Taking up a rod, he begins to smite Nephi and Sam, Lemuel joining him. 29. And it came to pass as they smote us with a rod, behold, an angel of the Lord came and stood before them, and he spake unto them, saying: Why do ye smite your younger brother with a rod? Know ye not that the Lord hath chosen him to be a ruler over you, and this because of your iniquities? Behold ye shall go up to Jerusalem again, … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review: September 10-15

We have had a few blogs covering the different aspects of preparedness. In Are You Preparing in All Areas of Your Life? Miriam points out the importance of being physically prepared to meet the challenges that life throws your way. In What’s In Your Food Storage? Tristi points out some areas that you may not have considered, as well as the importance of adapting food storage to your family’s needs. Tristi has added a great new section about daily scripture study. You can read more of her insights in 1 Nephi 2:1-4, Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 2:5-7, Scripture Study 1 … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 3:1-7

When we left off, Nephi was anxious for the welfare of his brothers’ souls and the Lord told him that if Laman and Lemuel did not choose righteousness, they would be cut off. We head now into chapter three, and begin with verse one: And it came to pass that I, Nephi, returned from speaking with the Lord, to the tent of my father. Right off the bat, I find this intriguing. He didn’t say he was praying to the Lord, which would sound like a one-way conversation – he says he was speaking with the Lord, which means there … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 2:19-24

Nephi is concerned about his older brothers Laman and Lemuel. He sought to know the truthfulness of his father’s words and received a testimony through a heavenly visitation, and his brother Sam believes him but Laman and Lemuel will not listen. Nephi loves his brothers and wants them to taste the light of the gospel, and so he has spent much time praying for them. Verse nineteen: And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto me, saying: Blessed art thou, Nephi, because of thy faith, for thou hast sought me diligently, with lowliness of heart. Right there, the … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 2:16-18

I skipped verse fifteen which perhaps I shouldn’t – it’s one that the youth love to say they’ve memorized. Okay, here it is: And my father dwelleth in a tent. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way . . . When we left off last time, we were discussing Laman and Lemuel, and how they had a hard time accepting the words of their father. They’d had every opportunity to learn the gospel the same as Nephi had, but because their hearts were not in the right place, they could not hearken to the Spirit. This caused much … Continue reading

The LDS Families Week In Review: February 25th – March 3rd

We have certainly had a prolific week here at the LDS Family Blog! The blogs have ranged in subject, covering nearly every aspect of the gospel. Let’s take a stroll through just a few of them. Gospel Doctrine (Sunday School) In Pride and Charity, we discussed how we need to be certain that we weren’t doing good works to attract worldly attention. In Divine Communication, we discussed how we can use sincere and heartfelt prayer to draw closer to our Heavenly Father. In Receiving What We Give, we were reminded that as we sow, so shall we reap, whether it … Continue reading

RS/EQ: The Role of Angels

The first Relief Society lesson of the month is generally selected and prepared by the Relief Society president: in short, totally random and fairly unpredictable, and thus difficult to prepare for. However, now that I’ve been called into the Relief Society presidency, one of my duties is to prepare a lesson, and March is my turn! So, although the contents may not be as close to the Relief Society lessons you will receive on Sunday, the gospel principles are certainly just as applicable to all of our sisters. This lesson will actually have a familiar ring to it, as the … Continue reading
