Focus during Scripture Study

How do you prepare yourself to study the scriptures? What frame of mind are you in when you kneel to pray? It is important to come prepared so that you can learn as you study and pray. In 3 Nephi 11 we read about how it took the Nephites three times before they were able to understand the voice from heaven. In verses 5 and 6 we read: “And again the third time they did hear the voice, and did open their ears to hear it; and their eyes were toward the sound thereof; and they did look steadfastly towards … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review June 9th-14th

With the approach of summer, life sure gets busier every day. If you weren’t able to read all the blogs in LDS this week, here’s your chance to get caught up. We started the week with “The Great Pajama Adventure,” a look at the lighter side of mothering as Tristi recounts sewing her toddler into his pajamas so he’ll keep them on. We then learned what happens “When Scouts Choose Not to Come,” and talk about times when a boy might not want to participate in the Scouting program. “Encouraging the Reluctant Scout” lists ways we can make Scouting a … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 17:7-11

Lehi and his family have reached the land of Bountiful, which is full of fruit and honey. After so much time eating whatever they could find or kill, they are overjoyed at the fresh produce and the change of pace from their normal diet. 7. And it came to pass that after I, Nephi, had been in the land of Bountiful for the space of many days, the voice of the Lord came unto me, saying: Arise, and get thee into the mountain. And it came to pass that I arose and went up into the mountain, and cried unto … Continue reading

Scripture Study – 1 Nephi 16:10-19

Nephi and his family have been camped a short distance from Jerusalem while they took care of the remainder of their business with the city. Now with the brass plates and with new brides, they are ready to head out into the wilderness, never to look back. The first morning of their new lives, a discovery is made. 10. And it came to pass that as my father arose in the morning, and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment he beheld upon the ground a round ball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 15:20-25

Upon returning from the mountain where he met with the angel of the Lord and saw a vision concerning the future of his seed and that of his brothers, Nephi was met by those brothers who were full of questions about the prophecies of their father, Lehi. Nephi is consumed with the Spirit and wants his brothers to understand the importance of the things they have been taught, and so he speaks to them further about the things of eternity. 20. And I did rehearse unto them the words of Isaiah, who spake concerning the restoration of the Jews, or … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 15:7-11

Nephi has just come down the mountain from his vision of the latter days, and is met by his unbelieving brothers. Filled with the Spirit, he’s in the perfect mindset to teach his brothers the things they need to know, but he finds them unreceptive, which concerns him greatly. 7. And they said: Behold, we cannot understand the words which our father hath spoken concerning the natural branches of the olive-tree, and also concerning the Gentiles. 8. And I said unto them: Have ye inquired of the Lord? Nephi knows from personal experience that the Lord is the source of … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review – February 11th – 16th

Every time I think things are going to slow down, they just get busier! If you’ve had that kind of week too and were unable to join us here in LDS, that’s okay. Here’s a quick summary to get you back to speed. In “Free Agency in Children,” we recognize that our children will become old enough to start making their own choices and either receiving the reward or the consequence, and we need to allow them to learn from their mistakes. “Dinner Discussions Week 6” outlines the lessons taught in our various church classes, and “A Personal Relationship with … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 14:8-12

We are still examining the vision Nephi had when he inquired of the Lord as to the meaning of the dream his father had. This section has taken us a long time to study, but it’s got so much good information in it, it’s impossible to just skim over it. 8. And it came to pass that when the angel had spoken these words, he said unto me: Rememberest thou the covenants of the Father unto the house of Israel? I said unto him, Yea. 9. And it came to pass that he said unto me: Look, and behold that … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 13:20-29

Nephi is being shown, in vision, the things that will happen to his seed and the seed of his brethren. He has been greatly concerned as to their future, because of his great love for them. 20. And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld that they did prosper in the land; and I beheld a book, and it was carried forth among them. 21. And the angel said unto me: Knowest thou the meaning of the book? 22. And I said unto him: I know not. 23. And he said: Behold it proceedeth out of the mouth of … Continue reading

Scripture Study – 1 Nephi 13:1-19

Nephi’s vision continues. 1. And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me, saying: Look! And I looked and beheld many nations and kingdoms. 2. And the angel said unto me: What beholdest thou? And I said: I behold many nations and kingdoms. 3. And he said unto me: These are the nations and kingdoms of the Gentiles. 4. And it came to pass that I saw among the nations of the Gentiles the formation of a great church. 5. And the angel said unto me: Behold the formation of a church which is most abominable above all … Continue reading
