Callings in the LDS Church

I have been thinking a lot about callings lately because of the recent changes in our ward. My husband finally received a calling this past week to be in the Sunday school presidency, and something tells me that a calling for me might be right around the corner. Probably because the Bishop asked my husband on Sunday what my first name is again. So, obviously, I think I am on his mind. Never a good place to be if you are trying to avoid a calling. But, I’m not. In fact, I have found that I feel a little lost … Continue reading

Daddy’s Girl No More

I always try to be positive about my ex husband, after all, he is Hailey’s father and she is a mix of the two of us so if I say bad things about him, I’m saying bad things about half of who she is. I worked really hard to make sure they had a relationship even going so far as to take her to his house and sit outside in the car reading a book so she could visit with him. I wanted Hailey to have her father in her life. Apparently that was more important to me than it … Continue reading

Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger Call It Quits

Call me silly, but I didn’t see this one coming. Yesterday, it was announced that journalist Maria Shriver and the former governator Arnold Schwarzenegger are calling it quits. The couple has been married for 25 years, but they’ve been together even longer than that. They were introduced by Tom Brokaw in 1977. After about nine years of dating, the seemingly unusual couple married on April 26, 1986 in Hyannis, Massachusetts. They seemed like an odd couple because at the time, Schwarzenegger was a body builder turned actor who supported the Republican Party. Shriver, daughter of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, was a … Continue reading

Charlie Sheen’s Not the Only One to Lose His Mind – Part 1

Remember the good old days when Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan were what you talked about around the water cooler? Yes, we thought they were as low as a celebrity could go, but just when you think that, someone else comes along to lower the bar. Right now, that person is Charlie Sheen. As my husband said the other day, Sheen’s gone so whacko that he wouldn’t be surprised if Sheen showed up with a swastika carved into his forehead, a la another infamous Charlie (Manson for those who don’t get the joke). In case you missed the Sheen meltdown … Continue reading

Christianity Leaves No Room for Hate

God is love. He is not hate. So, it is amazing to me, how some individuals can justify their actions of hate in the name of Christianity. I recently read an article on CNN.com that you can find here where an extremist, radical “church” (and I use those quotations on purpose) are going to protest the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards for “issues related to her personal life”. Whatever that means. The article goes on to say how this church has protested at funerals before. They have protested at funerals of fallen soldiers claiming that these soldiers were punished by God. … Continue reading

Saying No to a Calling

In the church, I have to admit that I have been jaded in the past about callings. There have been times in my life where the Bishop barely knows us and has given us callings that I felt were too time intensive, and too much of a sacrifice for our family. But, with that being said, I do have a testimony that everything comes from the Lord for a reason, and I would never turn down a calling. When my husband was in graduate school, there was a time where I wanted to say no. But, my faith in the … Continue reading

Deciphering Teen Speak: Words parents should know

An alert parent will know about about text speak and message board code, and we may even be able to decipher it. But we still get lost when we are talking to our teens. Yes, even with my suburban homeschooled teens, sometimes I have no idea what they are talking about. Some of the current teen talk just leaves me confused as to the actual meaning of what they say. Here are some of the words commonly used by teens that parents should know. Minute: We would think that when a teen says “minute” or “a minute” that they mean … Continue reading

Saying No

It is important to realize that are times that it is okay to say no. In the church, it is common for people to ask for things or favors. Since so much of our time is spent in service it can be difficult to say no when someone asks a favor or needs help. However, it is important that you protect the time that you have with your family, as well as maintain a healthy balance for yourself. So how do you decide when it is okay to say no? Really that will be an individual choice for you and … Continue reading

I Almost Didn’t Homeschool Because My Family Would Not Approve

When I talk to people about homeschooling, they often say, “I could never homeschool because…”. I understand what they are saying because many of the same reasons nearly kept me from homeschooling. I almost didn’t homeschool because I felt alone. I almost didn’t homeschool because I didn’t understand my options. I also almost didn’t homeschool because I thought my family would not approve. Here is my story. When I decided to homeschool my kids, I was really worried about how my family would react. I was certain they would not approve. I was sure they would think I had lost … Continue reading

Calling the Wrong Name

In a few of our past articles, Courtney and I have both been discussing affairs, wrong doings, and relationship mistrust. Some of these issues have been mental, some emotional, and others physical. No matter which type it is, we have agreed that it is a serious issue and should be discussed. I would like to somewhat continue our discussions of relationship mishaps. Today’s article is inspired from several different television show stories. However, the main one that comes to mind is Friends. Ross had several different relationship issues arise on the show. One of the main occurrences that I can … Continue reading
