Running on Low Spiritual Batteries?

by Tristi Pinkston | More from this Blogger

Just like a computer needs to be plugged in to the wall in order to get power, just like a flashlight needs to be filled with fresh batteries in order to shine forth with the most brilliant beam possible, we need to be plugged in to our source of power in order to function spiritually. We can only fake it for so long, dragging ourselves through Family Home Evening and to church with doggedly determined smiles on our faces, but before long, we'll run out of juice and have to get recharged.

What are some ways to spiritually recharge?

1. Prayer. Go to Heavenly Father and tell Him you're exhausted, and ask Him to renew you.

2. Scripture study. Feasting upon the words of God and the holy prophets is one sure-fire way to fill your tank with soul-saving energy.

3. Attend the temple with the desire to draw closer to Heavenly Father. There's nothing like those few precious hours, away from the world and from all the outside distractions, to bring you back into balance.

Now, I'm going to make a confession - sometimes I get really bored with scripture reading. I know, I know - not good. But here are some things I've found that really help me get the most out of it:

1. Instead of reading a part I may already be familiar with, I'll take a break and read in a spot that's less familiar to me. For instance, I'd be willing to bet that many of us have parts of the Book of Mormon memorized, but have only read the Pearl of Great Price a time or two. I'd also hazard a guess that the Old Testament isn't nearly as traversed as the New Testament.

2. Read your scriptures a line at a time and really think about it before moving on to the next, rather than just heading through it, boom boom boom. This is what I've been doing with my Scripture Study blogs, and I can't even tell you how much more I'm getting out of those verses than I ever did before.

3. Say a quick mental prayer about each verse, asking the Lord to help you understand it better. He loves it when people sincerely ask for greater understanding.

Sometimes we just get too burned out to be fixed quickly, and if you're at that point, you may discover that it's time to pull back and get some rest. Treat yourself to a long nap and a hot bath or shower. Give your brain a break for the whole day. I bet that once you've gotten enough rest, you'll be better able to recharge yourself and get moving again, physically but more importantly, spiritually.
