Gospel Questions: Turning My Back on My Brother

My non-member friend asked me: If I become a Mormon, does that mean I can’t talk to my gay brother? You absolutely do not have to give up a relationship with your brother if you join the Church. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that marriage between a man and woman is ordained of God. Our Heavenly Father organized this world and set us here on the earth with the hopes that we would form family units, multiply and replenish the earth, and bring up our children with both a mother and a father, as much as … Continue reading

Gospel Questions: Why Don’t Mormons Date until Sixteen?

Yes, we are a peculiar people. It’s okay if you think that—we’re used to it. More evidence we are peculiar is the fact that we encourage our teenagers not to date until they are sixteen. Why do we do that? As Latter-day Saints, we take the admonition to stay morally clean very seriously. We consider premarital sex and promiscuity to be sins and we strive to avoid those mistakes. By asking our teenagers to refrain from dating until they are sixteen, we are giving them the chance to develop a bit more maturity, both mentally and spiritually, before introducing them … Continue reading

RS/EQ: “Prayer, the Passport to Spiritual Power”

One of my favorite lessons from the Spencer W. Kimball manual this year was “Prayer, the Passport to Spiritual Power.” He states: “I always have very tender feelings about prayers and the power and blessings of prayer.” He then relates the story of a time he visited New Zealand and fell ill. He was scheduled to speak at a conference, but worried that he would have to cancel. At nearly seven o’clock, he arose from his bed, got dressed, and hurried to the place where the meeting was to be held. He entered the arena to the sound of applause … Continue reading

RS/EQ: The Women of the Church

Our Relief Society and Priesthood lesson for this week came from the Spencer W. Kimball manual and is entitled, “The Women of the Church.” President Kimball expressed his appreciation for the way his mother created a home where service was central to all they did, and explained that his wife created a similar home as well. He then goes on to discuss the role of women in the church. First, men and women have equal roles, even though those roles are different. We are not to compete with each other. The man does not walk in front of the woman, … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Honorable, Happy, Successful Marriage

This lesson by Spencer W. Kimball makes me all the more glad the church coordinates lessons from auxiliary to auxiliary. After all, it’s always nicer to have a lesson on marriage when both the husband and wife can hear it! The lesson begins with a memoir from a former employee of President Kimball’s, who shared how she saw him write a letter to his wife every day while she was off staying with a sick child in the hospital. Sometimes, when he was very busy at work, he’d dictate a letter and this employee would write it down. She said … Continue reading
