RS/EQ: “Selfless Service”

Lesson 8 of the Spencer W. Kimball manual for this year’s course of study is entitled “Selfless Service.” We begin, as always, with a short story from President Kimball’s life that illustrates the point. He was flying out of Chicago and noticed a young mother, heavily pregnant, struggling with her two-year-old child. The plane was late, the toddler was tired and cranky, and because she was threatening miscarriage, the mother was not able to pick the child up. President Kimball stepped in and offered to hold the child, giving her a piece of gum. President Kimball later received a letter … Continue reading

Mary, Martha, and Me: Seeking the One Thing that is Needful – Camille Fronk Olson

The book “Mary, Martha, and Me” by Camille Fronk Olson offers new insight into the biblical account of the two sisters from Bethany, one who sat at the feet of Jesus and let her sister do all the work in preparing the meal. As we remember from the story, Martha had been working hard to make her home ready for her special guest, and Mary chose instead to sit at Christ’s feet and listen to his words. Christ spoke to Martha, not angrily but gently, as He commended her for her diligence, but then told her that Mary had chosen … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Shepherds of the Flock

This week’s Relief Society and Elder’s Quorum lesson is #23, entitled “Shepherds of the Flock,” which I find particularly suited to this time of year, as we picture Christ as the Good Shepherd and we prepare to celebrate His birth with images of shepherds welcoming the angelic hosts on that first Christmas night. The lesson, however, doesn’t speak of those shepherds, but instead of supporting and sustaining our Church leaders as they shepherd us back to the fold. We are taught, in the words of President Spencer W. Kimball, that the Lord Himself sits at the head of this church, … Continue reading

My Shepherd Will Supply My Needs

When my husband and I were first married, we were both unemployed. I had been working for a floral shop in a town about twenty miles away from the apartment we’d found, and quit my job in order to move. He lost his job the week before the wedding, so there we were, both dead broke. We’d already put a down payment on the apartment and decided to go ahead and move there anyway, and we did, after the honeymoon. We then both went out and pounded the pavement. Following a prompting, we decided not to wait to start our … Continue reading

Dinner Discussions 2007 Week 13

This week’s dinner discussions are based on lesson thirteen for the Senior Primary, Sunday School and Young Men’s and Young Women’s lessons. The Nursery and Junior Primary’s lessons are from the special Easter lesson at the back of the manual. You may need to make adjustments if your ward has already had Stake conference. Be sure to keep the lessons upbeat and positive. If you have a child in Nursery or Junior Primary he learned about Easter and Christ’s sacrifice. The nursery children learned about His birth and life. The lesson did cover the crucifixion, but focused more on the … Continue reading
