We Are a Worldwide Church

What does it mean to know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a worldwide church? It means that every Sunday, Saints around the globe are meeting together to worship our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, just as we are here. No matter where they live and where they meet, be it a hut, a nice church building, or a member’s home, they are singing the hymns we sing and hearing the lessons we hear. If you take a trip and visit a ward or branch somewhere else, you will find everything administrated just as it is … Continue reading

Home Teaching Message: Hidden Wedges

The home teaching lesson for this month, given by President Thomas S. Monson, begins with a story of a wedge that I have loved since I first read it in a manual many years ago. The premise of the story is that a beautiful tree is destroyed in an ice storm by a wedge placed in its branches many years before. President Monson goes on to talk about hidden wedges in our lives. The hidden wedges President Monson addresses are those of hardheartedness. The leaders of the church – and the scriptures – have taught us time and time again … Continue reading

Marriage Fights: In-Laws

In contemporary culture, in-laws (especially mother-in-laws) are regarded on the same plane as lawyers and used car salesmen. Though we might know one and think well of them, as a group, they take a lot flak. As Latter-day Saints, we know that we are sealed to our in-laws for eternity. If for no other reason, we need to work to make our relationships with our spouses’ parents work. Here are some suggestions for helping. Don’t move in. When you are first married and struggling to get started, you might consider moving in with one set of parents or the others. … Continue reading

RS/EQ: “A Willing Mind”

As part of his teachings on forgiveness, President Kimball frequently taught the concept that we must forgive to be forgiven. In a previous blog, we have discussed why the Lord might make it so. However, as I have studied the concepts of forgiveness, I have always wondered what I would do in a truly terrible situation. I have four small children. I think I could forgive any harm done to me, be it injury of the physical or emotional kind. However, as I look at my little ones, I wonder if I would be strong enough to forgive anything done … Continue reading

RS/EQ: For Christ’s Sake

In February, we talked about the miracle of forgiveness. One requirement for obtaining forgiveness from God for our sins is that we must forgive those who wrong us. There are times that this can be difficult or challenging; however, it is something we must do. As we begin reading this week’s lesson, we learn about an incident in President Kimball’s life where he sought to defuse a ward-wide fuse. After much counsel, prayer, and study with the two opponents, he read to them from Doctrine & Covenants 64. The verse which most touched them was verse 9, when they learned … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Receiving What We Give

At various points in His ministry, the Savior emphasized that we will receive that which we give. If we judge others, we will receive that self-same judgment in return. If we forgive others, we will receive the Lord’s forgiveness. If we treat others in a specific manner, thus shall we be treated. These principles are elaborated again during the Sermon on the Mount. Why would a merciful Lord exact such a just treatment? Wouldn’t it be more along the lines of grace to simply forgive us for our wicked and human thoughts and actions? The Savior first tells us that … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Unable to See the Possibilities

In this week’s Sunday school lesson, Christ returns to Galilee to preach the gospel to His friends and neighbors (Luke 4:14-32). But instead of receiving the word of the Savior of mankind, they can only ask “Is not this Joseph’s son?” I began to wonder how many times we refuse to see the possibilities another person might have due to what we are so sure we ‘know’. Over and over again, we hear how important first impressions are. Although we are told not to judge a book by its cover – not to be bound by those first impressions – … Continue reading

Sunday Review: Hurt Feelings and Self-Confidence

I don’t know how your Sunday went, but mine was absolutely fabulous. I was touched to the quick by the talks in both Sacrament and Relief Society. Both left me feeling uplifted and with a desire to improve myself. If you have read my RS/EQ lesson preparation from last week, then you know that I have struggled with the issue of hurt feelings. I have prayerfully considered what steps I need to take to change, and have asked the Lord for a great deal of guidance. I don’t feel that I am a candidate for inactivity, but I know that … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Stony Places

Since today was the last day that I was preparing for Sunday’s lesson on being offended, I decided that I should go back to the main point of Elder Bednar’s talk. He specifically addressed it to members who had fallen away or would fallen away due to offense. I couldn’t find ‘inactive’ in the Topical Guide, but there were a lot of scriptures under ‘apostasy of individuals’ that seemed relevant. I think the best section that I found came from Matthew 13. Christ presents the well-known parable of the seeds, and in verses 20 & 21, he addresses the seeds … Continue reading

The LDS Families Week In Review: January 21-27

It’s always nice to wrap up the week and summarize, especially if you’ve missed our blogs (I know you’d never do that)! As we start getting ready for Sunday, let’s take a look at what we’ve covered getting ready for our lessons. Sunday School We started off the week by examining the mission of John the Baptist in Prepare His Way and Making His Paths Straight. John helped prepare those he preached to for the mortal ministry of Christ. We took a look at how we can help prepare those around us for His second coming. In Unquenchable Fire, we … Continue reading
