Children and Work

Since the lesson in Relief Society a few weeks ago, I have been thinking about the importance of teaching your children to work. I was fortunate enough to be raised with a strong work ethic. I find joy and contentment as I work to accomplish my goals. I have always found satisfaction in doing my best and working on something. In fact it is when I am not accomplishing something, that I feel discontentment. One of my friends and I had a conversation a few years ago about work. She also had a very high work ethic. We both felt … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Our Stewardship of Time

The second parable given in Matthew 25 is that of the talents. A master leaves three servants in charge of different portions of his estate; he gives each a varied amount of talents. When he departs, two have increased their talents and receive their reward; the third has done nothing and is punished. The Lord has made us stewards over many things, and we, too, shall find ourselves accountable to Him. There are so many different ways to interpret this parable and apply it to us. The talents could represent our callings, our role as parents, or our spiritual gifts, … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: The Parable of the Sower

Circumstances did not allow for posting these lessons the weeks they were completed. However, it is my hope that you will still be able to take something from them. Today’s posts address lesson 11, “He Spake Many Things unto Them in Parables.” Today’s scripture study focused me on the parable of the sower, found in Matthew 13:1-8. The first thing I did was to match up the verses of the parable with the verses of Christ’s interpretation (found in 13:19-23). As we examine Christ’s explanation, try to remember that one of the interesting things about parables is their wide array … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Serving God Through Eternity

The second section in the President Kimball lesson manual centers on the eternal mission of Christ. Though we usually think of Christ’s time on earth as the primary substance of His mission, we must keep in mind that, like all of Heavenly Father’s spirit children (that’s us), He existed before the creation of the world, and will continue to exist long after. During that time, He continuously obeys the will of God and keeps Him as a primary focus. As Latter-day Saints, we know that Christ was Jehovah of the Old Testament. He organized the physical world we live on … Continue reading

General Conference from the Past: Strengthen the Feeble Knees – Marvin J. Ashton

Elder Marvin J. Ashton delivered this address which was printed in the November 1991 issue of the Ensign. You can read it in its entirety here, but I offer the following highlights. He says he’s always been intrigued by the spiritual expression, “feeble knees.” While this makes us think of knees that aren’t physically strong, he also believes that it refers to fear, as we find it in Isaiah 35:3-4: 3. Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. 4. Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review – February 18th – 23rd

We had a wonderful week here in LDS. If you weren’t able to join us, here’s a quick summary so you can catch up. We started the week with lesson #3 in our Joseph Smith manual, entitled “Jesus Christ: the Divine Redeemer of the World.” We learn that Jesus Christ is the only way by which we are able to return to Heaven and partake of the blessings that await us there. “Choosing the Best for Your Family” reminds us that the choices we make as parents will have an impact on our children’s lives, and that as we move … Continue reading

Truly Lazy or Just Not Interested?

I think we parents have a tendency to worry that our children will be or are lazy if they don’t do all the things we think they should be doing. BUT, are they truly lazy—or is it just that they are not embracing our ideas of what they ought to be doing with their time? Is it really just a matter of them not caring about what we care about? Or should we be worried about their motivation and activity level? I find that my kids can get pretty motivated—get out of bed early, work long hours, and stay focused—on … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 8:19-25

Lehi has had a vision within a dream. He saw a tree filled with beautiful fruit, and upon eating it, was filled with such joy and delight, he wanted to share it with his family. The righteous members of the family joined him and ate, while the wicked ignored him. 19. And I beheld a rod of iron, and it extended along the bank of the river, and led to the tree by which I stood. I love this chapter and its marvelous allegory. The rod isn’t made of wood or other substance that might rot away, but it’s made … Continue reading

LDS Family Week in Review: June 3-9

This week, we covered topics ranging from postpartum depression to ways to keep our youth busy over the lazy, hazy summer days. And, believe it or not, we actually had a full week of Gospel Doctrine and Relief Society lesson blogs! All in all, it’s been an interesting week!
