RS/EQ: Honorable, Happy, Successful Marriage

This lesson by Spencer W. Kimball makes me all the more glad the church coordinates lessons from auxiliary to auxiliary. After all, it’s always nicer to have a lesson on marriage when both the husband and wife can hear it! The lesson begins with a memoir from a former employee of President Kimball’s, who shared how she saw him write a letter to his wife every day while she was off staying with a sick child in the hospital. Sometimes, when he was very busy at work, he’d dictate a letter and this employee would write it down. She said … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Tragedy or Destiny?

Lesson #2 in the Spencer W. Kimball manual for this year’s course of study is about death and sorrow, and is entitled “Tragedy or Destiny?” The subtitle reads, “When we face the apparent tragedies of sorrow, suffering, and death, we must put our trust in God.” The first part of the lesson shares a story from the life of Spencer W. Kimball. He endured much sorrow in his young childhood as a result of the death of loved ones. At the age of eight, his baby sister died shortly after birth. Only a month later, Fannie, the five-year-old, also passed. … Continue reading

RS/EQ: “Jesus Christ: My Savior, My Lord”

“Jesus Christ: My Savior, My Lord” is the title of lesson #3 in the Spencer W. Kimball manual from which we have been studying this year. Even just the simple six words of the title evoke such feelings of worship and love as to be overwhelming. We begin the lesson with an experience from President Kimball’s life. Fairly early in his apostleship, he suffered three heart attacks in two weeks. After spending seven weeks recovering at home, he desired a change of scenery and traveled down to New Mexico to stay with his Navajo friends. One morning, his friends were … Continue reading

RS/EQ: The Women of the Church

Our Relief Society and Priesthood lesson for this week came from the Spencer W. Kimball manual and is entitled, “The Women of the Church.” President Kimball expressed his appreciation for the way his mother created a home where service was central to all they did, and explained that his wife created a similar home as well. He then goes on to discuss the role of women in the church. First, men and women have equal roles, even though those roles are different. We are not to compete with each other. The man does not walk in front of the woman, … Continue reading
