General Conference From the Past: “Look to God and Live”

In October 1978, Elder Carlos E. Asay of the Quorum of the Seventy gave a talk entitled “Look to God and Live.” In this talk, he described the importance of keeping our gaze focused on Christ. In doing so, we, too, might look to our Father in Heaven and receive eternal life. Elder Asay provides various stories, in and out of the scriptures. He begins by speaking of a man who had sunk low. Involved in drinking and in drugs, this man always kept his head low, focused on the feet of those around him. Said Elder Asay, “this alcoholic … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: What is Eternal Life?

This week’s Sunday School lesson is entitled “And This is Life Eternal.” This title comes from John 17:3, which states that life eternal is “that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” We are told in Moses that the work and glory of God is “to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.” But what is the difference in the two? What, exactly, is eternal life? A book I have recently read on scripture study advises that you take note of “God’s definitions.” Throughout the scriptures, the Lord tells … Continue reading

RS/EQ: All That My Father Hath

As I studied the second section in the President Kimball manual today, my eye was drawn to the reference to D&C 84:39. Here, President Kimball speaks of a covenant. Although it doesn’t specifically relate to integrity, I would like to take this chance to explore that covenant. After all, it is difficult to keep up our end of a promise if we don’t know what the promise is. This section of the Doctrine and Covenants starts in verse 33, and refers to those who are “faithful unto the obtaining these two priesthoods…and the magnifying their calling.” In short, the people … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Serving God Through Eternity

The second section in the President Kimball lesson manual centers on the eternal mission of Christ. Though we usually think of Christ’s time on earth as the primary substance of His mission, we must keep in mind that, like all of Heavenly Father’s spirit children (that’s us), He existed before the creation of the world, and will continue to exist long after. During that time, He continuously obeys the will of God and keeps Him as a primary focus. As Latter-day Saints, we know that Christ was Jehovah of the Old Testament. He organized the physical world we live on … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Why Does God Let Tragedies Happen?

After my daughter started crawling, I had to resist the urge to rescue her all the time. This proved significantly harder with her than with the other two because she was the first. When she slipped, when she fell, when she strained for something just out of reach, my maternal instincts screamed for me to rush to her aid. Over and over again, I repeated to myself that she needed these slipups, these errors, these trials to grow and develop. After all, if I held her hand every step of the way, she would never learn to walk on her … Continue reading

Articles of Faith Series: The First Article

The Prophet Joseph Smith wrote the Articles of Faith to be a summary of the beliefs of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and to this day, we turn to those Articles to teach the rudiments of the gospel to those curious. Our Primary children are asked to memorize them as part of receiving their Faith in God award, and we often quote them in our Church lessons. The first Article reads: “We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.” This statement is perhaps one of … Continue reading

Scripture Study – 1 Nephi 15:26-34

Nephi’s rebellious brothers are finally asking him questions about the words their father spake, and he is eagerly answering them. Anxious that his brothers finally see the truthfulness of the Gospel and repent, he has exhorted them with his whole soul. 26. And they said unto me: What meaneth the river of water which our father saw? 27. And I said unto them that the water which my father saw was filthiness; and so much was his mind swallowed up in other things that he beheld not the filthiness of the water. I think it’s interesting that Nephi picked up … Continue reading

RS/EQ: “Jesus Christ: The Divine Redeemer of the World”

Our Relief Society and Priesthood lesson this last week was found in the Joseph Smith manual, lesson three, and was entitled: “Jesus Christ, The Divine Redeemer of the World.” Just the title of the lesson brings me warmth and comfort as I know we’re going to learn something special from this inspired message. The prologue to this lesson points out that as the Prophet of the Restoration, one of Joseph’s primary responsibilities was to testify of Jesus Christ. In a world that had so much light and truth taken from it, his job was to enlighten the minds of the … Continue reading

The Ten Commandments Series: The First Commandment

Let’s take a closer look into each of the Ten Commandments, as found in the King James Version of the Bible, Book of Exodus, Chapter Twenty. The first commandment reads, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” There are several meanings to this simple sentence. First, we are not to worship any other gods. We do not worship Baal, or Asherah, or any of the heathen gods of Biblical times. We worship God, the Eternal Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ. We do not give any allegiance to idols or icons. Secondly, we are to be devoted in our … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review: January 21st-January 26th

In case you missed any of the blogs here in LDS, here is a recap so you can stay on top of things. In “The Importance of Families,” Tristi shares an amusing story about her three-year-old and relates it to the knowledge each of us has, deep down, that our family is important. She also begins the new year’s course of study for Gospel Doctrine with “The Keystone of Our Religion,” which is the Book of Mormon. Miriam shares with us her ideas for how to have “Effective Family Home Evenings,” and talks with us about the blessings that will … Continue reading
