Articles of Faith Series: The Sixth and Seventh Articles

The sixth Article of Faith reads: We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth. When Jesus Christ was on the earth, He set up His church in the way He desired it to be. He had twelve apostles who helped Him with preaching the gospel and administering to the needs of the people. He gave us the sacrament. He gave us all the basic tenants of the gospel. He showed us how He wanted it to be administered. When He appeared to Joseph Smith and told Joseph … Continue reading

But I Don’t Have Visions

Earlier, I posted the Joseph Smith lesson from a week ago, entitled “Personal Revelation.” One sentence in this lesson really struck me. I quote: No man can receive the Holy Ghost without receiving revelations. The Holy Ghost is a revelator. – Joseph Smith I stopped to ponder that for a moment. I was baptized into the Church and confirmed a member. At the time of my confirmation, I received the Holy Ghost. Does that mean I can now receive revelations? Yes, it does. Every person who has the Holy Ghost can have revelations. But that doesn’t mean that you’ll necessarily … Continue reading

Did you miss some of our blogs here in LDS this week? Never fear—this summary will get you caught up to speed. We began the week with a closer look at the fifth commandment, which tells us to honor our parents—they have sacrificed a lot for us and can also be good sources of counsel and advice for us, no matter what our age. Keep on track with the lessons at church with this week’s “Dinner Discussions,” and in “Concern for the One,” we read of Joseph B. Wirthlin’s conference address which reminds us of the need to be there … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 15:35-36

After having a vision wherein Nephi saw the destruction of his brothers and their descendants, he returns to the camp of his father where he finds Laman and Lemuel waiting for him. They are troubled concerning the words of their father and they want to ask Nephi to explain things to them. The memory of his vision fresh in his mind, he wants to convince them to change their ways, and his earnest desire, coupled with their newfound willingness to listen, leads to a discussion about repentance and the need to live righteously. Perhaps concerned about the fate of their … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review – December 10th – 15th

If you missed some of the blogs here in LDS over the last week, come check out the week in review and get caught up. In “Shepherds of the Flock,” we read Spencer W. Kimball’s lesson on how we need to support our leaders and serve willingly in the Church. Wondering how to submit your genealogical information, now that it’s been gathered? Read “Using TempleReady” to discover the next step. If you need ideas for meaningful Christmas gifts, you might consider giving food storage. “December Preparedness Goals” gives you more information on this, as well as other ideas to put … Continue reading

The Power of Christmas Music

We’ve been taught about the power of hymns to bring us closer to the Savior. As I’ve been driving around town running my errands the last few days, I’ve also found that certain Christmas music also has that power – the car is one of the only places where I’m really able to listen to music and hear the lyrics. I’d like to share with you a couple of my favorite Christmas songs and explain just why they impact me so greatly. The first is “O, Holy Night.” I have loved this hymn for as long as I can remember. … Continue reading

Endure to the End

In the scriptures we can read about the importance of enduring to the end. One example of this is in Doctrine and Covenants 14:7: “And, if you keep my commandments, and endure to the end you shall have eternal life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God.” Similarly in Matthew 24:13 it says “But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” So what does it mean to endure to the end? When I think of enduring something, I think of putting up with something unpleasant or just hanging on until it … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: What is Eternal Life?

This week’s Sunday School lesson is entitled “And This is Life Eternal.” This title comes from John 17:3, which states that life eternal is “that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” We are told in Moses that the work and glory of God is “to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.” But what is the difference in the two? What, exactly, is eternal life? A book I have recently read on scripture study advises that you take note of “God’s definitions.” Throughout the scriptures, the Lord tells … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Our Stewardship of Time

The second parable given in Matthew 25 is that of the talents. A master leaves three servants in charge of different portions of his estate; he gives each a varied amount of talents. When he departs, two have increased their talents and receive their reward; the third has done nothing and is punished. The Lord has made us stewards over many things, and we, too, shall find ourselves accountable to Him. There are so many different ways to interpret this parable and apply it to us. The talents could represent our callings, our role as parents, or our spiritual gifts, … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Unable to See the Possibilities

In this week’s Sunday school lesson, Christ returns to Galilee to preach the gospel to His friends and neighbors (Luke 4:14-32). But instead of receiving the word of the Savior of mankind, they can only ask “Is not this Joseph’s son?” I began to wonder how many times we refuse to see the possibilities another person might have due to what we are so sure we ‘know’. Over and over again, we hear how important first impressions are. Although we are told not to judge a book by its cover – not to be bound by those first impressions – … Continue reading
