Endure to the End

In the scriptures we can read about the importance of enduring to the end. One example of this is in Doctrine and Covenants 14:7: “And, if you keep my commandments, and endure to the end you shall have eternal life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God.” Similarly in Matthew 24:13 it says “But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” So what does it mean to endure to the end? When I think of enduring something, I think of putting up with something unpleasant or just hanging on until it … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Endure To The End

The third section of this week’s lesson by President Kimball is subheaded “The gospel of Jesus Christ charts our course back to our Heavenly Father”. Here, President Kimball expands on how the laws and ordinances of the gospel, coupled with the atoning power of Christ and the power of forgiveness in our lives, bring us home to dwell with Heavenly Father again. Over and over he stresses that there is no other way to return to our Father except through Christ. So many subjects came to my mind as I studied this section that deciding on one was nearly impossible. … Continue reading

The Miracles of General Conference

Wasn’t last week’s general conference wonderful? I love the spirit it always brings into our home and appreciate the things we learn. One of our high councilmen made the comment last month that general conference gives us our marching orders for the next six months. If we’ll carefully listen and do what we’re told in the conference talks, we’ll enjoy tremendous blessings and spiritual growth. I saw evidence of some of this spiritual growth in a very unexpected way. My nine-year-old son is a skeptic. Anything you say to him, you have to prove. Unlike my daughter, who has limitless … Continue reading

A Personal Relationship with Jesus Christ

At this time of year, the focus seems to be mostly upon the Baby Jesus who was born in a manger. At Easter, we think about the Atonement, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. What do we think about the remainder of the year? Having a personal relationship with our Savior is a crucial part of our exaltation. As we come to know Him, we come to understand the role He played in our redemption, and how we absolutely cannot return to our Heavenly Father without the Savior. Everything we are and have is possible because of Jesus Christ. He created … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Tragedy or Destiny?

Lesson #2 in the Spencer W. Kimball manual for this year’s course of study is about death and sorrow, and is entitled “Tragedy or Destiny?” The subtitle reads, “When we face the apparent tragedies of sorrow, suffering, and death, we must put our trust in God.” The first part of the lesson shares a story from the life of Spencer W. Kimball. He endured much sorrow in his young childhood as a result of the death of loved ones. At the age of eight, his baby sister died shortly after birth. Only a month later, Fannie, the five-year-old, also passed. … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 8:19-25

Lehi has had a vision within a dream. He saw a tree filled with beautiful fruit, and upon eating it, was filled with such joy and delight, he wanted to share it with his family. The righteous members of the family joined him and ate, while the wicked ignored him. 19. And I beheld a rod of iron, and it extended along the bank of the river, and led to the tree by which I stood. I love this chapter and its marvelous allegory. The rod isn’t made of wood or other substance that might rot away, but it’s made … Continue reading

LDS Family Week in Review: July 8-14

This week in the LDS Family blog, we discussed a variety of topics, including agency, priorities, and service. Join us for a review! Gospel Doctrine Lessons: In “I Know Him Not,” we talked about Peter’s denial of the Savior, and how we, too, may be denying Him in our lives. In Release Barabbas, we discussed how many of the Jews chose worldliness over the Savior’s way. In “Thou That Destroyest The Temple…”, we considered the ironic words of those who scorned Christ before He died. And in Deathbed Repentance, we talked about the thieves hanging on the cross with the … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: “I Know Him Not”

This week’s Sunday School lesson focuses on the trial and crucifixion of Christ. After His arrest, the disciple Peter followed Him from afar. When recognized, he denied knowing Jesus three times, as Jesus had earlier predicted. When the Lord turned and looked upon Peter, the disciple remembered his vow to follow Jesus to prison and to death (Luke 22:33), and he “went out, and wept bitterly” (Luke 22:62). Here we have a man, a disciple who loved Christ earnestly and sincerely, and who had already given up so much to follow Him. Why would he then deny the Savior? President … Continue reading

Visiting Teaching Message: Standing Strong and Immovable

This month’s visiting teaching lesson is on how to become the Lord’s instrument by standing strong and immovable. As we stand against the tides of the evil one, we are able to stand in holy places. As always, you should prayerfully select from the quotes given in order to teach the things the sister you are responsible for needs to hear. It is interesting to me how this relates to one of the blessings promised to the elect, as we discussed in the Gospel Doctrine lesson for the week. In JS-M 1:11, we learn that “he that remaineth steadfast and … Continue reading

A True and Valiant Heart

This upcoming weekend is stake conference for our stake. Instead of my regular lesson-oriented scripture study, I’m hitting the topical guide for phrases that have peaked my interest. Every once in awhile, a phrase catches my heart and leads me to the scriptures. Today, I heard the phrase “a true and honest heart.” The Spirit pricked my heart, and I decided to find out what the Lord might mean when He referred to this. There are so many scriptures that refer to an honest heart, however, that I am focusing today only on the first part. The word ‘true’ has … Continue reading
