RS/EQ: Developing a Friendship With the Savior

This week, you should be studying lesson three from the Teachings of the Presidents of the Church book. The lesson focuses on Christ and His role as our Savior and our God. As I studied the first two parts, I was touched by the depth of the love President Kimball obviously felt for the Lord. The first section, on the life of President Kimball, recalls a time when then-Elder Kimball left his sickbed to commune with the Savior and to celebrate his role as an Apostle. The scene painted so obviously reveals the love and emotion the man felt towards … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: “I Know Him Not”

This week’s Sunday School lesson focuses on the trial and crucifixion of Christ. After His arrest, the disciple Peter followed Him from afar. When recognized, he denied knowing Jesus three times, as Jesus had earlier predicted. When the Lord turned and looked upon Peter, the disciple remembered his vow to follow Jesus to prison and to death (Luke 22:33), and he “went out, and wept bitterly” (Luke 22:62). Here we have a man, a disciple who loved Christ earnestly and sincerely, and who had already given up so much to follow Him. Why would he then deny the Savior? President … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Preparation and Fear

Amazingly enough, we have read the entire Sunday School assignment for week, and have time to explore the scripture chain at the end of the lesson. This chain is entitled “Preparing for the Second Coming,” and starts off with D&C 38:29-30. The end of the verses is perhaps the best known – “if ye are prepared, ye shall not fear.” This line is one of those that you hear about during lessons or talks on family preparedness – food storage, finances, and so forth. But the verses actually refer to the persecutions the Saints were receiving, which persecutions are one … Continue reading

Dinner Discussions 2007 Week 6

This week the dinner discussions are based on lesson 6 in most of the manuals. It is important to remember to keep the discussions upbeat and positive. It is a great way to reinforce the principles your children are learning at church. If you have a child in nursery or Sunbeams, he learned that Heavenly Father and Jesus loves him. The lesson talked about the blessing that Heavenly Father and Jesus give us. It also shared the stories of Jesus spending time with the children in the New Testament and Jesus blessing the Nephite children in the Book of Mormon. … Continue reading

Obeying From Trust

Earlier this week, we talked about obeying the Savior from love. A comment in response to that blog made me think about another reason we obey the Savior – because we trust Him. Oddly enough (or perhaps not), the subject raised its head again as I was studying this week’s Relief Society/Elder’s Quorum lesson. As I discussed, the Savior wants us to obey Him out of love. However, even if we love someone, it can be difficult to trust them. Take for instance your marriage. If you have trouble trusting your spouse on some issue – financial, spiritual, or even … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Serving God Through Eternity

The second section in the President Kimball lesson manual centers on the eternal mission of Christ. Though we usually think of Christ’s time on earth as the primary substance of His mission, we must keep in mind that, like all of Heavenly Father’s spirit children (that’s us), He existed before the creation of the world, and will continue to exist long after. During that time, He continuously obeys the will of God and keeps Him as a primary focus. As Latter-day Saints, we know that Christ was Jehovah of the Old Testament. He organized the physical world we live on … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: They Forsook All, and Followed Him

For today’s scripture study, I examined Luke 5:1-17. In these verses, Christ ministers to a crowd, and then calls His disciples to follow Him. Although we examined the reactions of Peter, Andrew, James, and John two weeks ago, I noticed something different in their calling. In Matthew 4, we watch the disciples immediately spring into action. Without hesitation, they decided to serve and follow the Master. Today, as I studied, I see that not only were ‘quick to observe’, they were also complete in their following. “They forsook all,” verse 11 tells us, “and followed him.” If you follow the … Continue reading
